I have a 2000 f250 xlt with auto and lock hubs. Should I be able to turn on the 4 wheel drive without moving the hubs to the lock position?

Yes you should.

The lock position is an override in case the hubs do not lock automatically.

Well, you should... I actually have Random Access 4x4. It fails to engage 10% of the time now... so it's getting more consistent. But I have discovered if I turn the engine off, then restart it begins working. As my truck has 5000 miles on it and the problem is not consistent yet, I'm waiting for more consistency before returning it for repair. In the mean time I just call it a piece of Ford Crap, recrank and keep going.

Don't get me wrong, I just happen to think of all the crap out there the Fords smell the best.
