What is the "muffler delete" that I keep reading about?? If it is removing the muffler completly like I think it is I would thing that it would make these monsters loud as h*!!
Not sure what it is either, but if it is removing the muffler, it might not be as loud as you think. The catalytic converter muffles exhaust sound quite a bit. I run my RX7TT without a muffler and the noise is still legal for the street.
Took my muffler off and left the Caty on. This is sudo straight piped i guess. The noise is really very easy on the ears. Just put a 3.5 inch pipe from the Caty to the tail pipe, about 100 bucks at the muffler shop. Like the whistle too, not too loud, but noticable.
Just a thought. But is removing the muffler legal? I know tampering with the exhaust system on a gas engine is a no no. But being as it is a diesel, it sounds like it is exempt from a lot of gasoline engine mandates (exhaust emmissons testing being one) And if it is not against federal law to remove the muffler, are there any states that forbid removing the muffler.
Also, Does anyone remember exhaust cutouts ?
They used to sell them in the JC Whitney catalogs. It was a short Y pipe with a cable controled damper that you would mount in front of the muffler (weld in if I remember). With a pull on a choke like **** on the dash the butterfly inside would close off the muffler and open up the exhaust.
Are these still available? if so where?
I think I would rather have that than to do away with the muffler altogether
It's all a matter of perception...
How loud is Loud???
I did the muffler delete and it is pretty loud at full bore and epecially after 8 hours at 85+ mpg...
around town it is ok though...
course that's in an excursion... maybe the superduties are quieter because they don't have to worry that the whole tailpipe runs the length of the 'vehicle cabin'...
Thank you resqdawg3 for clarifying. Sorry I was not more specific. I don't know for a fact that my setup is legal, but I have been through DEQ with it several times and they have said nothing.
I think as long as the Cat is on there, you are good to go. That is the part that is not legal to tamper with unless it is damaged. Even if it is damaged, if you're within I think it is seven years of the model year, federal law says you need to put an OEM Cat back on. This all might be null and void for the 6.0 since in the state I live in, deisels over a certain weight are exempt from DEQ. Dunno.
I also have lost mine and the noise level is not as bad as one would think. You can hear the whistle of the turbo more clear and the thing gets more heads turned because of that loud whistle from the turbo.I dont think that I picked up that much but from what I read that EGT's go down a bit.
cannot even tell it's gone from inside the truck really...outside, sounds wicked!
i love it....although i am usually driving the truck, so i dont get to hear the mad roar as the turbo spools from outside the truck.....but driving next to a wall at WOT from a stop sure is gratifying (sp?)
You lost me there..... When I said TT, I was clarifying what the RX7TT was, not saying that I had TT in my truck. I'm actually wondering where you got the idea that I hat TT in my truck because, I made no reference to it.
