I drove it today for the first time ever... I loved it, It shifts really well.. the clutch needs to be adjusted up some thou, but other than that its fine... I need to get the starter rebuilt.. I broke the stud out of the sylenoid when I was tighting the power cable up to it.. So there is something else I need to fix. I got the brakes working Great.. It stops pretty good to just have two rear brakes.. I dont know how good that they will do if they get wet.
Thanx for everyone's ideas and thoughts of what may have been worng with it
I know i'll have to come back here because its hard to keep these things runng good..lol

Word of caution here about the clutch. When folks build these rails many times I've saw them put together without a clutch stop at the pedal. Due to this many times the clutch will be adjusted low to avoid an over throw on the throwout bearing's control arm. When adjusted properly the clutch can be pressed far enough down to cause the throwout bearings control arms to be pushed into interferance with the pressure plate. This causes a very ugly mess in the bellhousing and usually destroys the pressureplate and throwout bearing's control arms resulting in much work to repair. In the car the floorboard was the stop for the clutch pedal. When used in the rail application there isn't normally a stop in that position unless it is fabricated there just for the clutch pedal. Many times that gets over looked. So BE KNOWING.
Gosh I didnt know that, But when I have to puch the clutch in to shift I have to just a bout mash it all the way to the floor, is that right? I know for a fact its got a pretty well new clutch/pressure plate..
Go buy the book called "the complete guide to vw's for the coplete idiot" take no offense to the title. John muier knows his **** on vw's. It's a long shot but I had a mouse nest in the drivers side of the intake once and it wouldn't fire for anything.
Go back through and check everything. timing, wires, caps, then check the boots between intake pieces. to much vac leak and she wont fire. All else fail's swap motors. it's easier then changing a head on the rail.
