gas lift struts

Had a brainstorm the other day, got a tweak in my back from lifting that big ol' hood on my '72 4 wheeler. Grabbed a couple of gas struts off the pile and bolted them to the hood and inner fender. Not perfect, but after a 12" lift, the hood goes up by itself! I used the same lifts as my '97 Cherokeep uses, but with some looking I might find two that work even better. They are just a touch long, a shorter set would be the ticket.

Your original hood springs must be pretty weak or are they still there? If you're set on looking for the gas struts, I've seen them hanging on racks at the local parts stores, ie. Kragen's, Pep Boys, NAPA. I remember that they're a bit pricey. You can take a look at the ones on the shelf to find the right fit and application. Then hit the local bone yard to look for that particular vehicle. Or maybe you can find new or better hood springs.

hood lifts

My hinges are still on truck, in addition to struts. I had to replace struts on Jeep, not quite strong enough hold that heavy rear hatch up high. So I used the old ones to install on truck. If I put new ones on it instead, I think the hood will almost lift itself when it is unlatched. They are about 20 bucks each, but a small price to pay for that luxury! Of course I could go to a fiberglass hood....
