And to the guy that was worried about his wheels falling off due to bad wheel cylinders..... Wheel cylinders are one of the internal component in a drum brake system, they move the brake shoes so they contact the drum, and in turn stop the car. The wheels will not fall off becuase of bad wheel cylinders.

My brother is trying to buy a car. He's gonna buy used. I like Focuses, and he does too to a certain extent, but he's worried about the brakes. He says that three focuses he's driven have had bad brakes. Have any of you heard of bad brakes on Focuses? Should he be worried about brakes on Focuses? I think the seats on the Focuses are great- you can actually see out of the window fom the back seat, and you don't sink all the way down!!!!!!
Replies??!?!?!?!????
Have you given a Taurus any thought?
My wife was absolutely dead-set that we were going to get a used Focus, till I made test drive the Taurus that we now own.

He was probably talking about the wheel bearings. Didn't they have a recall on them?
I have to agree about the taurus, they run forever as long as you dont beat the crap out of tranny. The tranny's might have improved since my moms 95 but my moms has 90000 on it with out a problem. I drive the rental tauruses that we have in work and I really like em. Theres a sable tho that I was driving for a while and I really like that, I think it grew on me or something. I've also spent sometime in the focuse we have on rental, its not bad except for the manul window crank in them I find those stupid, your hand comes around and hits the arm rest so you have to move your arm in wierd positions to roll down the window. We have a couple of 2002 2001 taurus in work for sale for under 10 grand and thats with 40000 miles on em. One even had the 4 valve motor w/center counsel and floor shift(very nice).
I have an 02 Mach ZTS. It gets 28-31 mpg consistantly and does unbelievably well in the snow. I'm 6'2" and I can put my fist on top of my head and it still doesn't touch the headliner, and that's with the seat cranked all the way up.
We have a 99 Taurus that my wife drives, what a dog. I know a Duratech engine and the better transmission would help, but this thing (Vulcan engine and base trannie) doesn't seem to be half the car our '93 Sable was. Its loud and just feels cheap. It averages about 23 to 25 - just a hair better then my Grand Marquis. On long interstate trips the Merc actually beats it - about 27. They can be bought cheap though, maybe the current body style gives the car a more solid feeling.

Which means your Focuses are the base LX model, and Ford should have been shot for selling those to the rental fleets. You're driving the 2.0 SPI motor, which is a dog and runs rough. Drive a Focus SE with the 2.0/2.3 Zetec engine, and it's a completely different car. I can't tell you how many sales Ford lost because of the people turned off by their Focus LX rental car. Smart move, Ford........
