Found On Road Dead...almost

So there I was, all hooked up to my fver, pulling out of the jar store for a nice weekend of camping... and the truck loses all power... and I mean ALL POWER... I could barely creep it off the side of the road...

There is black smoke coming out the tailpipe like it was a diesel. The truck would barely run. I called my Ford dealer and they said to bring it out. So I unhooked my fver and barely got it to the Ford dealer. By now, the tailpipe is black with "carbon".

The Ford tech puts his code reader on it and it wont read any codes... nothing... not even abs. So I tell them that I have a Diablo chip in it. We decide to take the chip out and see if it will read. I go to unbolt the cover and the ECM is hot to the touch. OH BOY!!!!

I take the chip out and the truck codes read fine.... eveything works again... I go on my merry way...

The truck performed fine the entire weekend.

Why would the Diablo chip do this to my truck... I've had it in for about 4-6 weeks and no trouble prior to this, even pulling the fver.

Help please....

Slammer,
no idea why it would do that, but that does make me think twice about a Diablo chip now. Sorry it happened to ya, but thanks for letting us know

I was looking into a Diablo chip as well for a 5.4l 2001 F250. What motor do you have that had the problem?
Hey Ken how 'bout some response??

Bummer.

Have you spoken to the chip dealer to see about a replacement or refund? I'd like to know how they handle this.

Hmmm.. Makes me think twice as well. I was seroiusly considering chipping my 5.4 for more pulling power as well. Now i am not sure if it will be such a good idea.

I'm always REALLY LEARY of chips and performance add ons. They ALWAYS have a cost in reliability.

In my experience with EFI equipped snowmobiles (Arctic Cat ZR 600EFI LE), the chips work great (really great), for about 500 miles, then expect to put a new top end in your sled.

In the end, when you are adjusting timing curves and running leaner, which all chips do to make power, you have to sacrifice somewhere. By removing the factory "safety cushion" you're going to have some reliability problems, it's INEVITABLE.

I had the sled fixed under warranty twice by putting the stock chip back in and taking it to back to the dealer. After a couple years of getting burned, Arctic Cat got smart and made the chips non-removable and put in a code that flagged any tampering, if the code showed red, you were S.O.L. on ANY warranty work, period.

I suspect it won't be long before the automakers start doing something like that as well.

Anyhoo, just my $.02

Waxy,

I also had a problem with a snowmobile. I had a 91 Polaris 650 that was fuel injected and they replaced chip numerous times.... and the drive clutch.... and the gears..... and the weights and spring...

I'm hoping that this is an anomaly and that it'll work out, I bought the chip from motorhaven but I havent talked to Ken yet.

Knowing the guys that "frequent" this site, I'm sure we'll be able to come to some sort of happy ending
