I have a 98 explorer xlt 2wd. My lower ball joints need replacing, I was reading my Haynes manual and it stated that the lower ball joints on 95 and later models if worn or damaged, you have to replace the whole control arm, but I was looking at it the other day and noticed that it had a snap ring around the top end of the ball joint and it looks like its pressed in. Has anyone came across something like this? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.
Others have brought that up. Initially you may have had to when only factory ball joints were that had a smooth side. The replacement ones now have splined edges that dig into new metal when they are pressed in. I did mine a few months ago.
I too am confused about the non-servicable balljoints. I have a 96 EB Explorer 4WD w/124K. It needs all four balljoints replaced. Can the upper and lower ballsjoints be replaced or just the lower and replace the upper control arms? Also, I would say I am your average shade-tree and do 99% of my own maintenance. I have never attempted front-end work. Is this truly something I can do in my home garage with normally available tools? Does the 4WD complicate the picture greatly? Thanks!
Just to clarify my "no front-end experience". I consider myself a brake semi-pro and a terrific repacker of wheel bearings (although it has been some time). I have also done the requisite shocks and lube. So, please take that into consideration on the question of can a person do it at home. Also, on another post, I read something about needing an hydraulic press for the joints. What say ye?
