i just put 15 inch rims on my 99 ranger 3.0 flex fuel and want to
adjust my speedometer because it is not only off by 5 mph but it is throwing my overdrive off. what do i do to fix it. the dealer said look on the back of the transmission for a cable and take it out and put on a new gear but i looked and didn't find one. i thought it was all computer controled how can i fix this??
Welcome to FTE. I believe there is a sensor on the rear axle. The dealer can reprogram the computer for the wheel change. I don't have all the details.
It should vary. The faster you go, the farther it's off. I setup a formula on my PC to calculate just this very thing for my new tires. The easiest way to fix it is to figure out what overall diameter you need and then get some tires that meet that criteria.
It will vary because when you are at zero mph it will read zero with or with out the bigger tires, but lets not get into calculus on here.
It doesnt matter anyways, i was just curious how he determined it was off by 5 mph and at what speed. If he used another car, how was he sure its speedo was correct?

Huh? A stealer saying that a 99 still has a cable?
If you don't care to spend for the reprogramming job, you could buy a set of tires to match the rolling radius of what you had on the truck.
I've got a 94, so I've gotta' get a speedo gear when I dump the 14s and find some tires with grip in the 215/75/15 mold....
Anyway, find a stealer who knows what's going on in 2004 to do the job for you!
He said he changed the tires/wheels or whatever. So if you know what you had, and compare it to what you put on it, you can figure out exactly how far your speedo is off, and you don't need calculus to do it. It's basic algebra really.
But as far as fixing it, you have to reprogram the computer, or get tires that will compensate for the diameter you gained/lost with the new wheels.
