Like a good forumite, I utilized the search function long before posting this.
I'm having trouble with my 4WD engaging. After checking this forum, I went to see if my front axle was spinning. It was. So, can I assume that it's not the transfer case or shift motor? Are the automatic hubs the only thing left?
Hi, by the way, I'm new here.
Oh... truck info. 1996 Ford Ranger XLT Super cab, 4.0L V6 4WD.
I'm not an expert at this at all but I also had a problem like this with my 96 Ranger. I had the automatic locking hubs and when I would try and use them they would make ratcheting noises and then they just wouldn't engage. I replaced them with manual hubs "Warn" and the 4x4 works oustandingly. The manuals do require a conversion kit but it's not that much more. I went to a Ford dealership and they were going to soak me for around $1600.00 to replace the auotmatic locking hubs. I put the manuals in myself and the cost of the hubs and conversion kit was around $200.00.
That definitely helps! After reading about all the problems with automatic hubs, I'm seriously considering going to manual. I don't mind twisting them myself.
I don't suppose you'd be willing to point me in the right direction for finding some hubs and conversion kit, as in a website.
