When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, sometimes I get gear clash (synchros) as if I shifted improperly. I've changed the original tranny fluid and choose Mobil Synthetic ATF as a replacement, but the problem still exists. It doesn't matter if the tranny is hot or cold in temp.
There are no leaks and the fluid levels are checked often because of the known M5OD shifter rail plug problems. I drive normal without making fast, hard shifts while sometimes pausing to allow the shifter to center itself better before going from 2nd to 3rd.
I'm worried that this continued clash will create severe problems in the future if not taken care of now. I've read that the M5OD does not have the best positive shifting mechanism.
Will replacing the shifter with the Hurst billet series help this problem? I know they are near $200.00 but a tranny rebuild, used tranny, or remanufactured one is a lot more in parts and labor and may ultimately not address the M5OD design flaw.
Well I got that same problem and I just rebuilt mine maybe some 3000 kms ago... I replaced the third/fourth synchro with a new one, thats just one of the problems with mine. First to Second it even grinds. Then I put it in reverse and I think my reverse gear is falling off it shaft. its loose in there and will not provide smooth operation. it jumps inside the case, its so bad it sometimes doesnt let the truck roll. Untill enough force is put on it to make it roll.... All I gotta say is that tranny is a peice of ****! Royally... Id hate to be the technician that makes a living off these things because comebacks would really break the guy.
