A couple weird ones. Last week while driving home from the country my ABS light came on after a quick stop. At the same time my speedo stopped working. However the mileage counter on the computer (Lariet) still worked. At the same time the tranny started shifting funny, hunting, shifting hard, not shifting. I pulled over, shut it off, looked around, started it back up took off, everything ok.
This past week on my short trips to work and around town the ABS would come on on one start, then not the next, then on, then not.
Then this past weekend back up at the country the service engine light came on, then the speedo would go out and the shifting problems would pop up. The really weird thing is when the speedo wouldn't work I could turn off the motor (coasting if need be), start it right back up and the the problem would go away. There would be a problem every other time I started it. The service engine light is still on. I don't fill up in the country, mostly at the Costco in Houston.
I checked the manual reguarding the check engine light. I topped off the tank, added some fuel cleaner and will see if that helps. Regarding the ABS light, a few weeks ago I had to replace one of the front hubs. The new unit comes with a new ABS pickup. I checked the 3 ABS connections (2 front hubs and the rear diff) and they all seem ok. The ABS still seems to come on and off at will. It'll come on AFTER I start moving a bit so it seems the sensors aren't sending the info to the PCM. I thought about disconnecting the battery to reboot the PCM. Anyone know if the Service Engine light comes on for a mandatory trip to the dealer for a check and reset? I've seen this on some other cars I had. Our ond Maxima came on at 50k, just trip a switch and the light when off. just was supposed to remind you to stop by the dealer to check the emmisions system.
My experience from my 1992 F-250 was the same regarding the speedo and ABS. It could be a metal chip/flake that has gotten in front of the sensor. The rear axle on my truck had the sensor in the differential housing, not sure where your speedo pick up is on yours but you may have to drain the diff and clean any metal contaminates out. hope that helps.
Thanks colt, I'm going to try to clean them tonight. I know the mag pick-up on the hub I replaced had some crud in it. Bummer is on the fronts I think I have to pull the rotors again, just did a brake job about a month ago.
Thought I'd pass on a follow up. After searching old messages I came up with 2 things. 1) I replaced the speed sensor on the rear diff, a $13.00 part and a 5 minute switch. I also rebooted the PCM for the check engine light. Both are out and everything seems to be working.....so far.
