Since my '03 Excursion with 6.0L PSD has anti-lock brakes, when and how do they work?
Questions:
1) Do they work in 2-wheel only?
2) Do they work in 4-wheel?
3) How many "channel" system is it?
More channels means more responsive... this was from my Mercedes and Lexus car experiences. Wife now drives my hand me down Lexus... this is so I could be the one to drive the new '03 Excursion... and she isn't getting it unless I get a new one!!!!
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Anti-Lock Control
The 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS)
prevents wheel lockup by automatically modulating
the brake pressure during an emergency stop. By
not locking the wheels, the driver can improve
steering control during hard braking and stop the
vehicle in the shortest possible distance under most
conditions.
The 4WABS controls both front and rear brakes
separately. The brake pedal force required to engage
the 4WABS function may vary with the road
surface condition. A dry surface requires greater
force than a slippery surface.
During the 4WABS operation, the driver may feel a
pulsation in the brake pedal, accompanied by a
slight up and down movement in the pedal height.
In addition, a mechanical noise from the engine
compartment may be heard. The pedal effort and
pedal feel during normal braking are similar to that
of a conventional power brake system.
Thanks... I knew all that... I just did not know if it worked in 4-wheel drive or not. I was under the impression that several years back, it only worked in 2-wheel drive mode.
So I guess my new question is... when driving on a slippery/snowy road (in 4-wheel drive), does ABS still work and control wheel lock on all 4 wheels?
Hate to wait until next snow and ice storm and try it out.
I have a shop repair manual and it dosn't say any thing about driving conditions. but in my personal experience on ice and deep snow in 4x4 and 2WD it works in 4 wheel drive but you can still lock the brakes up on ice, it's just harder to do, I go off roading allot with my truck and spin around in empty parking lots. and I can tell you you could lose control on ice. the best thing you can do is find a empty parking lot with snow or ice and play with it a little and get a feel for it, the slower you go the more the brakes will lock up.
Don't tell me you go 4-wheeling and off-roading in that nice new truck you have shown.... tell me you have an old "beater truck" you take out on the "back 40".
click on "club FTE member" under my user name it will take you to my web page on this site and at the bottom of the first page you will find links to other pages and ya that truck!!!!!
Ya not to bad for a big heavy truck, It's all in the driving, in deep snow i let almost all the air out of the tires so thy are half flat and go real slow and it will stay on top, 2 weeks ago i followed a jeep club on a back road in 4' snow for about 10 miles thy were laughing as thy took off but when thy got as far as thy could and i pulled the last one out thy couldn't believe a stock 1 ton dually went as far as thy did. but i know thy had to come out the same way so if i got stuck thy would have to pull me out of the way.
