I noticed the same thing when I changed my oil over the weekend. In 2000 miles, I lost 3 quarts in my 2001 f250 5.4 4x4. When I had my 2000 f350 5.4, I never had this issue...

Wow. A decade later and it's still a problem. Its difficult to tell if the OP had a diesel or a gasser, I assume a gasser if it was consuming oil. FWIW, ford considers a quart every 1000 miles normal for the 5.4L engine.
