I live in Pa.Now our great state wants to make me put the original emissions equipment back on my ford truck. Well since my 78 f-150 ranger's inception the 351 is long gone for a rebuilt 400 and headers were added ,dual exhaust, high flow mufflers, and no cats. It had no air pump, can or anything on it when i bought it. So I went to my inspection station asked him . Well seems there is a big shortage of the manual the garage needs. alot of garages are back-ordered. Anyway he said stop in about two weeks from now and he would have the manual. Not knowing is bugging me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
EGR valve, PCV valve, and if it say's unleaded fuel on the gas gauge, a cat converter and the stock air cleaner with the hot air intake and the crankcase breather filter in it.
There is a way around the emission in PA If you fill out a paper at your garage stating that u dont put more that 5000 miles a year on your truck then you dont have to change a thing!!! If yoiu put more that 5000 miles on just make sure you have a spare odmeter and swap it out when you get around 4000 mile on your real one.
78 did not come with an air pump or cats unless it came from CA(i think). 79 was the first year they had them. i should know i've owned 8 truck between 78-79. and none of the 78's had them and all the 79's did. so your in luck.

I'm across the river in NJ and anything '78 and older doesn't require emissions,, period. The only pre-'79 truck I've ever had that I got with any emissions is the current F-350 and that came from CA. One of the major reasons I grew to love these trucks so many years ago. But if they are passing laws to change that in PA,, I can't help ya,, must be that "Commonwealth" difference.
What do they say about older engines being put in those trucks. Lets say you put a 390 in it, would they still make you put a air pump on there, and cats.
My '78 came ready for leaded fuel and w/out cats (thank goodness!!). From other previous posts I've read, Ford created the F150 out of the F100 as a way to get around the emissions laws that were coming into effect in the mid-70's. That's why it weighed just barely enough to be exempt from the emissions. Except in CA, which is kinda just waiting to fall off into the ocean (no offense to anyone in CA)
The current laws vary by state, and most will be dictated by what the vehicle had (or could have come with), not what it has now.
