My '79 F-150 (302/c4) is running hotter than it used to at highway cruseing speeds. I was told my EGR could be the problem as it maybe has a "lean" condition. I know I can pull the vacum line off and plug it to see if this is the problem, but is there another way to check and how can I make it not be lean?
Please advise.
Nick
The only way an EGR can cause a lean condition is if the plate burns out and you get a vacuum leak because of it. This is easy to check: just spray WD-40 around the base of the carb while the engine is running. If there's a leak, you'll not only see the WD-40 being sucked in, but the engine will speed up because the WD-40 richens the mixture. HTH.
I don't think the engine is running lean. I think it's a tad rich if anything. It's been cooler here than normal so it's hard to tell. He said the EGR system itself was "lean" dunno, just was told the EGR could possibly be my problem. How expensive is a new EGR? It seems the coolder it gets the hotter the engine runs. Kinda odd.

Don't know if his helps but the colder the outside temp. is the hotter the engine runs. It was about 30-40 outside last night and it was at the very top of normal almost outside of normal. It seems if it's warmer outside the engine runs cooler. Any ideas as to what would be causing this.
The engine detonates under very slight load (say accelerating from 30mph to 35mph) but not WOT or anything like that. It's always done this. I assume it's just 'cause it has 150,000 miles. I've tryed to decarbon it with various products and have had good results. With higher octane fuel it doesn't do this but that gets expensive and surely this truck was not made to run on premium. As long as it doesn't rain I'm going to pull the plugs today. My dad is really good with cars but he's been busy with family issues as my gand father just got colen cancer so I'm hoping y'all can provide some advice. I can fix stuff, I just gotta know what to fix
