Saw it at the movies months ago- a day or so after its release. It was one of the most believable westerns I've seen. The sound effect were awesome in the theater setting, and the scenery was breathtaking. In fact the last time I felt that way about the scenery in a movie was "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, also shot in Canada, I believe.
I saw the movie the night it came out on DVD. I think it was a great movie. It was kind of slow though. I liked the part when Kevin Kostner shot that guy right in the forehead.
I never have liked Costner, and if Robert Duvall had not been in Open Range I don't think it would have been as good a movie. I have to congratulate Costner on getting the settings and scenes right, though. It was the first time I actually saw cowboys digging ditches around their camp (wagons and tents) before a rain to keep the water from rushing in. Nice touch, realistic. My wife loved it, but she’s country – that’s a plus. The wardrobes and tack, britching and harnesses were realistic also. It was up there with Jeremiah Johnson, Lonesome Dove, Dances with Wolves. I’ll probably buy the DVD.

My wife talked me into going to see this. She had heard from her little sister that it was good. I have never liked Krutcher (even though I have never watched anything he did) because of what he portrayed in “That 70’s Show” and “Dude, who stole my car”, but after watching this I think he could be a good actor. There were some embarrassing parts for us older folks, but a good, smooth, interesting movie; not cheaply done as I expected.
