Heys guys i am looking at rebuilding my 390 to be a torque monster, i am putting in my 73 f250 highboy mud truck, i want it to make alot of torque. I am planning on doing this in the near future and am looking at some plans. Can you guys give me some different combos and some figure. Thanx
Stock heads with CJ valves.
Crane 343901 cam
Right at 9:1 compression
Headers
Performer Intake and 600 cfm carb of your choosing.
Melling M57HV pump with oiling mods (serach for them on this forum)
Have it balanced! Use quality fasteners for the heads, rods and crank. Use set of headers.
This part depends on where you want the power. If you like to rev it up past 4500 rpm use the Performer RPM manifold and cam with a 750cfm carb and CJ valves. If not save some money and use a stock 4V intake and 600cfm carb from a junk yard. Use the stock heads also.
I have a Stock 4 barrel manifold with the "S" on it a 600 cfm Holley and the 901 cam, and its great but it time to upgrade alittle more. I will be doing a complete tear down and rebuild. I was thinking maybe the 941 or 801 cam, redoing the heads with CJ valves and putting a 650 double pumper on it. ALso install the petronix kit and about 9:5 compression something like this. what do you guys think. How much power will i be making and are there any other combos that you guys know of i would like to make alot of torque because i will be nedding to turn at least 40 inch tires
Hey there,
I just built the 390 in my truck nearly the same as ratsmoker suggested above and I can bake 35 12.50 bfg's through 3rd with 4.10 gears. It has monster torque, but nothing above 4000. I can gas it in 4th at 1500 RPM and it actually pulls. I'm also running a D.U.I. distributor which was a HUGE, HUGE improvement over the petronix and aftermarket coil I had.
The 801 cam might be the hot ticket for you. You will need to get new springs and heavy duty shafts and stands. Adjustable rockers aren't a must but I would recommend them. The 941 cam might be a good happy medium.
what do you think about my combo do you think it will make good torque. Or what other suggestions do you have. This will be the first FE i will build Im only 17
I think the rest of your ideas are fine! The 600 double pumper should be changed to a 650 vacuum secondary though. The 801 will leave it a bit soggy on the bottom but the granny gear should make that unnoticeable. I would not do the 801 in your case. Too many valvetrain mods need done. The 941 should only require a set of springs. It will give you a better low end anyways.
THe "S" intake is about as good as stock intakes get as far as the ones you can find in the junkyard still. If you don't mind the weight it should perform similar to the performer.
Like Randy said, have it balanced.
The reason I ask this is because I found a guy that has a 390GT out of a Galaxy that has the 14 bolt exhaust manifolds. He said he would sell it to me for $300, What do you guys think? Will it be a decent upgrade from what i am thinking of doing?
Can you guys help please he wants to know as soon as possible and if its a good deal and if it will have better power i would lie to buy it. Please help
