Little help please. Rebuilding a 77 460. Want to keep the compression at 9.5 for pump gas. What would the difference be with a 460 30over or a 460 with a 514 bottom end in hp/tq ratings. Don't know for sure but assuming extra cubes would make alot more hp/tq. Will use a mild truck cam, steath intake, Holley T/A carb. L&L's, haven't figured out what to do with heads yet. I have the 77 heads that came with engine. I'm was told they will be fine for a street engine with opening up the exhaust side. Still trying to decide on bottom end. I do mind investing the money but I want the return to be worth it. Thanks, Dan
The D3s can be made to work well with proper porting, especially since you want to keep your comp down. Since you don't mind spending the money, stroke it. 460s respond very well to this and will walk all over a 30over 460. The only problem I see, is that with the other components you are thinking about using its more of a match with a mild 460. If you want serious hp/tq stroke it, but you'll have to step up your other components to match.
stroke no doubt, right now i'm the middle of rebuilding the entire engine and regret not going with a stroker right away. i only have the pistons in at this time, is it possible to change over the crank and rods (asuming that the stock 460 rods are to long) with out having to go back the machine shop for rebalance and machining? probably gona cost more than its worth at this time. next one will be an all aluminum 514...
Stroke that sucker and dont look back!! More cubes= more fun!! Besides, if you are buying quality pistons and rods a stroker kit is not much more.

proeliator, You dont think the stealth and a holley carb can make power? I agree a mild truck cam is worthless and the late model L&L headers are not the best design, but they aren't bad. What did you mean by this?
No problem. He mentioned using a standard Stealth (which IS a great intake) and a Holley T/A (which also is a pretty good carb for an off-road truck). BUT, although a Stealth would work fine on a stroker, there are several much better choices for that level of play. As far as the Holley Truck Avenger goes, it would majorly strangle a healthy stroker. A Demon 850cfm would be the smallest carb I'd run on a stroker...and I know many that are running 1000+cfm Dominators on theirs.
That's what T/A stands for..... Got ya. I agree the truck avenger carb would not work. While I was rebuilding my carb I borrowed a 600 from a friend's garage for a day and couldn't believe how it choked my engine. A night and day difference.
On my 514 with ported D0VE heads w/ oversize valves I'm using a stealth port matched with the casting marks cleaned up and a Holley 750 4160 carb, L&L headers to 3" exaust, and crane roller cam. Do you think the intake and 750 is holding me back? I was looking at the 870 street avenger and the 850 demon a few months ago. Do you think the demon is a better choice?
You don't mention the specs on your cam, but since its a roller I imagine its very healthy. That given with the rest of your combo I do believe you could find more with a different intake/carb combo on your stroker. Whats the use of the motor...towing...weekend warrioring...?
These days I usually recomend a Demon over the Holley street avengers. I currently am using a Holley HP 970cfm on mine but thats kind of a bear on cold mornings since it has no choke like the dominators.
It is my daily driver. I pull a trailer, haul a 8.5' camper, and have fun in the mud and snow. As far as cam specs, I can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but it is a mild crane hydraulic roller somewhere around 220in, 230ex duration at .050 and 560in 580ex lift. I do not like this cam as well as the regular hydraulic comp extreme 4X4 cam I had in it before that had almost the same duration w/ lower lift. That cam had a lobe wear off and I thought this would be an upgrade, but turned out to be a waste of money.
