Does anyone have the same annoying problem when they change the oil on their 03 Expy? After changing the oil and filter a small amount of oil still drips to the floor, about 4 or 5 tablespoons? I think the oil drain pan under the filter holds some oil and it pours out once you move the vehicle. I end up having to get under the vehicle to wipe off the excess oil and check for leaks again.
BTW – the drip pan on my Expy doesn’t even direct the oil to the front anyway like it’s supposed to. I’m thinking about taking it off.
I had to wipe the drip rail which had a good ammount of oil still on it. It seems to be worthless in my mind, as the majority of the oil from the filter goes off the back of the drip rail, insted of down it.
Same problem here on my '03. I thought initally it was the oil sitting on top of the skid plates and a sloppy job of cleaning them by the dealership. I chewed them out only to find what you decribe when I did it myself. I don't know where it goes, but it's all over the bottom of the truck and dripping in the driveway after I think I have it cleaned.
You are correct. The drain/drip pan on the 03 Expediton is close to worthless. What I find to be the best option is to reach up on top of it, from the front, with a big wad of paper towels in hand. After doing this 2 or 3 times, 99% of the oil is off. My arm is a mess, but the drip is pretty much done. Just another fine example of what appears to be a lack of testing on Ford's part for the 03 Expediton.
I don't' have that problem but a neighbor did on another vehicle. He made a habit of punching a hole in the filter end at the lowest point with a screwdriver, so it drained into a funnel connected to a tube which led to the drain bucket. He then drained the engine oil into a pan. By the time that was done, the oil filter had drained, and he put tapeover the hole he had punched before removing the filter. He claimed there was no mess that way. It might work for you.
I don't have that problem either...any way to do some creative "mods" to the offending drain pan? Maybe a little mechanical persuasion to remove it or bend it so things drain properly?
