Are they worth it or just stick with dino
Hi, i have the same motor as you in my E150. I switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic at about 55,000 miles and it's definately worth the switch. If your engine is excessively worn, or has bad seals, then the blend is good to use. Otherwise don't go with the blends becuase it really isn't that much better than dino.
Plus, even though you'll be paying more upfront for a quality synthetic, remember you can safely extend drain intervals and you save time changing your oil less often. Also with the synthetic blends you really dont know how much synthetic is in them, it can be as little as only 18% synthetic mixed with the rest dino.
Based on average retail prices, it is "worth" about $2.40 a quart. A "little bit extra" is about double the price.
The "benefit" of 30 percent PAO is probably at very low temperatures and allowing a 5W-30 without too much VII. I would consider using it if I had to use 5W-30.
Yes it’s double the price but the full synthetic is 4 times the price. I still think it’s worth it for someone who desires some extra protection. You’re correct the only thing the 30% will probably do is make the oil flow better at low temperatures and make the oil more stable.
i buy the 5 qt jugs at walmart. valvoline, quaker state, castrol all the synthetic blends are 10 bucks. they dont have mobil blend though. i find that to be pretty cheap. it comes out to about 13 bucks after you buy the 6th qt.
None of the synthetic blends (that I know of) tell you what percent is synthetic. Therefore I refuse to buy them. It could be 1% and it would still be a blend. This leaves them plenty of room to rip you off. If you want a blend, you can make your own by buying dino and syn and mixing your own. Then you can tailor make it to your own desires and you would know how much syn you have for sure. I've switched between dino and syn; mixed them; mixed weights; mixed brands; with absolutely NO ill effects. The last motor I did this with was a 4 cyl VW that went 250M miles and still didn't use a drop of oil. If it makes you more comfortable, you can use the same brand and viscosity.
