I have had optimas inseveral vehicles for the past 10 years, and in arizona batteries don't last long because of the heat. I have two yellow tops in my ford about 1 1/2 years, 1 in my hotrod 8 years ( drive it a couple days a week) and one in my wifes honda 3 years. and if you want more my mom has had one in her jeep that we had to just replace last month that lasted 10 years
Bubba-
You've got me confused. Is that your truck with the propane injection? In looking at the pictures, I see that Gary Johnson's name is on the album, but his truck is red, unless there's more than one Gary Johnson.
Fill me in.
In edit: I think I've figured it out. That's Dale's truck, isn't it. (I was going to delete this post altogether, but the system wouldn't let me.)
Boy, do I feel dumb.

Most interesting. The other air intake systems I've looked at all have a shield around them, and the little dirt gauge, like this one:

Thanks for the pictures, it is good to see what these things look like. Especially to figure out if they will fit. My old '78 F250 had enough empty room under the hood to store a few bales of hay. My F350 barely leaves room to get a hand or a wrench in anywhere!
A friend of mine tried to improve on the TYMAR by putting a shield around the intake end of the filter, thinking it would shield the filter from the heat of the engine. Then, he installed temperature probes on both sides of the shield, to measure the difference in temps. At idle, the probe on the engine side was reading about 60-80* hotter than the filter side, depending on ambient temperature. Once he started moving, however, the difference in temp fell to less than 10*. Considering the obstruction in getting ample air to the filter, I wouldn't think the shield helps you gain much, if anything.
Just my $.02.
Quad, I sent a picture of the Tymar Intake I got off Web Shots to that gal. Not my truck. I was lucky to get the HXP on! Bubba and propane! That's scarey! I need to get a shot of my rig and put it on here.
That's a common misconception about propane. There isn't any jolt. The truck just accelerates as hard in third as it does in first. Besides, you don't have to floor it to get the benefit......... but it's so much fun when you do.
Quadzilla - What type of propane kit are you running? I've heard that you run the risk of grenading the motor on propane - any special precautions or limit to the amount of propane on a stock 7.3 motor? Diesel nitrous - only it is a fuel, what a concept.
I am reporting back on the original thread - Cannot wipe big, stupid grin off of face
With Quadzilla's extensive help and tutoring (in all manner of diesel-ology), I PUT THE TYMAR IN!!! AND THE OPTIMA BATT'S!! (my decision on batt's. Quad not responsible!)
WOW!!! NEW TRUCK!!
Tymar fit PERFECTLY!! Batt's were just a mere "adjustment" - I drilled larger hole through front of tray where old, screw hole was. Put in J-hooks, and positioned them perfectly so cables worked well for length!! Did not put "bags" back on.
Will have to let you know in ten years how they are doing.
Meanwhile, just watch for the white streak passin' ya' - you know, the girl with the stupid grin on her face in the white 4dr that looks really cool!!
THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT!! (I will never be able to thank Quad enough for all of the tutorials - he's not through yet - on the PM side of life. He is one great guy, ya'll.)
Do you still have your stock downpipe and exhaust? Are you keeping track of your stats, like mileage and speed/RPMs, and all that good stuff? Got any plans for more mods?
I didn't know they had trucks in Utah!
Glad to see you got the mods done. Got one question though. I put the 65 Optima adapters on yesterday. Pulled the hooks and wing nut stuff off and put the original battery blocks back on. They are now secured better than before. Could you not use the blocks?
