This happened last Monday to the company and we share the yard with, but I wasn't able to get any pictures until today due to the "Cover Up" (they are afraid of OSHA).
They were pumping off a rail car into this tank, but the tank vent was closed. One of the workers said the tank was making strange creaking and popping noises for about 20 minutes BEFORE the top blew off, but he never gave it a second thought.
I climbed a tank on the opposite side of the yard for this pic. Those 2 silver tanks were identical until this happened.
Notice the hardpack frozen gravel? This is were it hit, it dug in about 8 inches or so. My truck was parked there loaded with diesel when this happened, yet there is not a scratch on the trailer. If that top would have sliced open the trailer, it would have quite a mess.
This is the top after they dragged it to the back corner of the yard.
This will give a overall perspective of the yard and the path the top traveled. I wonder how high it actually went, to come down straight enough to miss the trailer.
