FE446 , first mileage guesstimate!

It ain't pretty. But seeing as I've just been romping around town, testing, tuning and getting Dyno numbers, with very little highway driving, I shouldn't expect much more.

For the last 90.5 miles I refilled with 13.64 gallons of super.

Just over 6.6 MPG....ouch. And this stuff is getting expensive.

I thnk I need a gear change when I install the locker. Considering 3.55s or 3.73s.

Currently running 4.10 gears with 255-70r16 tires (only 30" tall).

Of course I had a sticky choke fast idle setting, probably didn't help.

Hopefully this week, I'll be installing the bed and the much larger gas tank with some better fuel line.

It never ends....

Ouch! Maybe some lighter spring in the dizzy could help you out a little. If it doesn't ping that is. You can't really tune for mileage with our MSD distributors. I was ready for the sacrafice when I bought mine. I'm dying to see some timeslips from that beast man!

Must get traction first. Looks like I might be able to find almost the same wheel in a 16x10. MT makes an ET Street in a 28x12.5-16 that would fit that rim, and probably hook up pretty good with some form of locker. 28 is a bit shorter than I would like, but theres not much available in 16s.

Right now, I need to focus on gettting the truck legal and dependable. It's primary task will soon be at hand :-)

i don't suppose the dyno was one bit friendly to the gas mileage and another thought is what the low rpm air fuel mixture. Just was because for high rpm power i thought it might have been riched to achieve the numbers but maybe not. Thats 6mpg is about what i get with all my wot adventures.

I think 3.50s or 3.55s are the way to go. I know you are going to pull a trailer and all, but with the numbers from the engine and all the freak'in torque you should have no problem with the higher gears.

Recommended RPM @ 60 mph:
Big Block: 1600-2600

With that said, if you go with the 3.55s this is what you get: 2450rpm's @ 60mph. With the 3.73s = 2574rpm @ 60mph. Now 3.50 gears = 2415rpm's @ 60mph.

Of course this is not knowing the C6 trans setup. But #'s 2 consider.

Quick question: What "much larger gas tank"? Details please...

hey biz where did you get the rpm at speed data. Its close cause i run 2400 at 60 with my 31s which are only 29 or 30 inches and 3.50 gears. It seems accurate to me.

biz4two,

Check here to see the bed mounted tank I plan to run. It's a meager 90 gallons. looks like I'll be needing it to get to work and back!

http://www.thedreyerfamily.com/69Gas.htm

I spent yesterday running CLR through it and blasting it out with my pressure washer. I had let it air out for months, so that I could install a sending unit. naturally, airing out=rusting :-( I expected that. It was worth not blowing up when I cut on the tank.

I think the dyno runs definately skewed the results. I mean, WOT takeoffs are bad enough, but keeping it up there, frequent restarts, changing jets and having all the fuel leak out of the carb, that kind of thing.

I'd run another tank and see what happens.

Yea but.........Greg just won't be getting good mileage with that serious engine. My 428cj is pretty much at stock specs, and I can get 12mpg out of it (granted, its totally dialed in), but my dead serious race motor in the truck in my sig only gets between 4-6mpg. Big motors + big trucks = gas hogs.

That is why he got that big tank aftert all

Yeah, the formuls made sense when gas was about $1.25. But now, at $1.75 a gallon, it's gonna hurt a little more.

I think it will improve a bit with some more tuning, and some more typical driving with some highway miles. I may be getting the boat this week, so I can get a feel for how a gear change might effect things. Right now, it stays in 3rd unless I come to a complete stop or stomp on the gas, a comment on it's torque and low gearing.

The boat should be about 6000lbs on the trailer. So, it's less than I origianlly anticipated for this build. I finally came to my senses and realized that having the big sexy cigarette style boat just didn't make much sense, seeing as I'm married and would rather do some skiing/wakeboarding.

Glad that it is pretty accurate. See link below.

Thanks! Now that is a gas tank! When that baby is full...will equal some serious weight. May need to add an over-load spring setup in the rear when full and pulling the boat. (grin...just kidding)

Nice design!

Not so much weight to worry about. Remember this is an F250. I actually need some weight in the back to get traction.

The reasons for the monster tank:

1. remove the in-cab tank for storage and a subwoofer

2. remove the aux tank to run true efficient dual exhaust

3. the obvious reason, this thing will get bad mileage and I don't want to stop at every town for gas.

4. This particular tank was actually cheaper than some of the smaller units, that are built into too boxes etc. I liked the Diamond-plate tool box/gas tank combos, but they cost about $1000 with a sending unit. Now, I've installed a sending unit and will have the tank painted when I paint the truck.

MY concerns: this tank isn't actually designed for running the truck. It had a bunch of labels on it "Use for transporting only, yadi yadi yadi lawyer stuff"..I wonder if I'll have any trouble getting an inspection?
