delay going into reverse-C6

I bought a 77 F150 4x4 351M with a C6. When I shift the transmission into reverse, there is a several second delay before it actually decides to shift into reverse. It shifts fine in all forward gears. It seems like a permanent problem since it has been doining this since I bought the truck a couple of years ago. And when it finally "drops" into reverse, it really slams in there! The mechanic that checked it over before the purchase said that there wasn't anything you could do about it, just ride it and rebuild it years from now when something else happens to it. I guess he was telling me it is more of an inconveinence than anything. It is constant: All seasons, warm engine or cold, level ground and hills, all the time. I'm worried about the effects down the shaft like the pounding on the joints and the ring and pinion. Any ideas or solutions greatly appreciated!

It sounds like an internal problem requiring trans removal. Thats what the Mechanic meant. You could make sure your linkage isn't out of adjustment. Say when you pull the shifter into reverse the lever on the trans is a off a little that will cause a delay. But slaming into reverse sounds like something is sticking. Try a complete fluid change and switch to synthetic fluid. If that doesn't work pull the tranny.

Thanks, I'll try the synthetic oil and a new filter first. I've been driving this thing for over two years like this. I intend on redoing everything front to back, top to bottom, inside and out starting this spring when I begin the resto. Hopefully it will last that long. But, by the way my fortune goes, since I decided to ask for info concerning it, the thing will blow completely outta the truck no later than next week! I appreciate the reply. Unfortunately, the linkage is great. Heck, I couldn't have a problem that simple!
