i have an old 65 torino and i noticed that in the snorkel part of the air filter housing( looks like a frying pan) i have some sort of a trap door setup that blocked the air from comming in through the snorklel(pan handle) and allowing air through the bottom instead ,the trap door thingy can be screewed in or out openig or closing the trap door.
i would like to know what is this for and what would happen if i screede it to open.
thank you.
Maybe Kenny won't notice this here.....lol........ what you're looking at is the heat door - there should be a flex tube going down to a sheet metal stove that bolts on the block near the exhaust manifold. It draws warmed air from around the manifold to help the engine run smoother until it warms up - then the door closes and the airflow flows directly into the intake from the front.
It 's a northern adaptation - probably something you don't need in Taos, NM unless you run it at high elevations.
thanks mtflat !!!! so if i had to screw it to where it no longer sucks from down the manifold area will this change anything -ie. gas consumption ...? . we are pretty high up in taos..
so, the trap door opens up when temp rises , ha, will it hurt to keep it open ?
It will run either way - open or closed. It may run a little rough and might use a little more gas, but only until the engine warms up. Then you want the air coming thru the snorkle. (larger opening)
thank you again mtflat, all you say is correct cause i screwed it to open and she did need lots of encouragement after cold start and she did run alittle shakey then she was fine .
thank you agin bro and ,sorry to ken and the rest if i put this in the wrong forum.
do we have a section in the forums for ford cars?? if so prease let me know..
F.T.E. rules!!!
Hey man, glad to be of help! No FTE doesn't have a car forum, but there is an engine forum - however since all these trucks have engines the line gets blurry sometimes. We just pretend that '65 engine is in a '48 pickup - then it's OK.
Fortunately Kenny is one of the most gracious moderators we have at FTE. He will stretch and allow discussions that some of the other moderators would throw out. (Thanks Kenny!!)
I have the "boss" to thank for allowing us older truck forum moderators a little more flexability.
Also, I have everyone in here to thank. I have been blessed with a forum full of really great people, and the flexability has never been taken advantage of!
On some of the other forums you just can't be as flexable. If you let one "non-conforming" post slide through, more will soon follow.
