Looking to buy a new ATV in the next cpl months. Is there anyplace that gives invoice prices on these things?? (like kbb or edmunds) If not, then what is the normal % off retail you should pay? Most of the dealers here want to start at MSRP and add all kinds of fees. Assembly, doc, shipping.. etc. I know of one place that shows it's out the door prices, no haggling, and they are reasonable but don't carry all the brands I'm interested in.
Thanks.
BTW, they are: Suzuki Eiger 400 4x2 Auto, Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x2 auto and Yamaha Bruin 350 4x2 auto
The best bet is to go around to all the ones in the area and ask them for the bottom line. My parents did...and instead of paying the $6200 sticker price...we got it for $5800 OTD (out the door w/ all the fees)
Yes, they publish the MSRP's, but some stores still sell at different prices. I feel I was ripped off on my Sportsman 400 when I bought that in 2001. I went to a differen't dealer, which has had much better service, and could have gotten a 700 for what I paid for my 400. Ticks me off to this day.
You should never have to pay the MSRP whether its an ATV or truck. What I do is get at least 2 dealers to give me their best prices. Its very similar to buying and auto. You have an advantage because most people don't "have" to have and ATV . . . so play hardball with them.
just curious, are you sure you DONT want 4wheel drive? it might get you unstuck out in the woods, and when you decide to sell it your resale would be easier if its 4wd. The kodiak is suppose to be a pretty good machine, i had a Big Bear ( pretty much the same ) and i think the big bear has a lower price. now i have a Grizzley 660 w/ 27" mud tires, winch, plow. paid 6800 + the tires and winch

I agree. After a couple months you will be wishing for a 4x4. Your best bet is to look for an ATV with the push-button 2x4/4x4 switch. One flip of the switch takes you from 2wd to 4wd. I LOVE this feature on my Foreman. I dont know what I would do without it....
I currently own a 01 big bear 400 4x4 and paid under $5000 out the door for it. Has been a great machine.
I personaly dont recomend the Bruin or the kodiak 400 if you will be doing anything other than light trail riding with them (no low range on a belt drive quad is not a good thing). If you plan on doing any work look at machines that are either geared shift or belt drives with dual ranges.
I would sugest looking at some of the differnt ATV Forums for opinions on some of the different machines and pricing. Check out these forums.
Thanks for the tips so far. Most everyone I know has 4x2 quads and all say they've never needed 4x4. I do not plan on riding in mud or snow or climbing any steep hills. Mainly trails, logging roads and forrest service roads. The Eiger has a low range tranny so I was leaning towards that one. Also Bombardier has the Outlander which has independant rear and low range. Until the end of January, they will also throw in a 3 yr warranty.
HillBillyWagon- are the Kodiaks belt driven? i had the big bear and im pretty sure it wasnt belt driven... i just thought the kodiak was identical to the big bear, just fancier with better suspension and a higher price?
V10man.
Before you buy, check out Arctic Cat. I just bought a 300 & a 500 from Az. Jet Ski. They recently started carrying A/C and beat other prices by $500. on the two. Their service is good. They had a 2003, 300 2x4 last week OTD for $4200. Ask for Kenny. These quads ride like a baby buggy. They are a quality machine. I have nothing to do with either company, I got their name from the A/C Web site and am just a satisfied customer. The bikes have Suzuki motors in them but everything else is Made in USA. The frame is powder coated. They also have some 2x4 rentals that they may sell. They stock new 300, 400, 500, and 650's.
If you play your cards right you can get under MSRP and beat them out of new tires sometimes. Do you know anyone that wants a 4wheeler also? If so get together and buy that way. I had 2 buddies that each wanted the same machines and walked into a dealer and said they would buy 2 machines right then if they knocked this much off the price and put on winches.

Yep the 00 and newer kodiak 400's are all belt driven with a 401cc liquid cooled motor (00 through 02 have dual range and 03 and 04's have a single range due to the intro of the Kodiak 450). The Big Bear also got a 400cc air cooled motor with a single range 5 speed geared trans.
If you were familiar only with the 99 and older yamaha lineup then you might recognise some of the names but with the exception of maybe three quads they are all compleatly different animals.
Right now I have an 01 Big bear 4x4 that is ported and polished, camed, locked, lifted, bored to a 446, 589's, with full works suspencion. Great bike and will thrash trough the mud as well as any SRA bike in production right now. I think however that I will be selling it to go for a new quad with IRS though in the near future.

Hillbillywagon- my grizzly has IRS, and its 4 times as comfortable to ride as the big bear was. not to mention the ground clearance i gained on it. my hitch on the F250 i had sat pretty low for a HD truck, that my small trailer actually had the same tounge height when i had it behind my Grizzly, as it was for my truck!
who did the mods to your big bear? yourself? or did you take it to a shop? notice a big difference? id like to get some more grunt out of my grizzly, but for now its just perfect
