Whining during acceleration
First of all, Hello. You folks have a great group going here. My question is about a whining I hear while accelerating from about 45mph and up. It is only during acceleration, never while standing still or at takeoff. It sounds like the fuel pump(?) or differential noise.(?) Help.

Could you provide us a little bit more info on your Truck!
What year? what model? what engine?
here are some things to look at
Altenator
pwr steering pump (chk fluid level)bearings,
clutch fan hub
loose serpentine belt
adjuster pulley bearings
Now if its an automatic chk fluid level in it
Also sometimes a heat sheild weld will break and cause a rattle type sound
Fuel pumps are in the tanks on newer trucks
except diesels ,Never owned one.
Is this a gear type whine?
Just a few things

Could you provide us a little bit more info on your Truck!
What year? what model? what engine?
here are some things to look at

Whining during acceleration
Sorry guys, brain in neutral. It is a 2002 F-250SD CC 5.4 liter Auto. Cannot get it to whine in neutral and the whine does not seem to cycle with engine rpm's, only with vehicle speed. I know what power steering on a Ford should sound like and it's not that. It's not a rattle so the heat shield thing is out. I had something similiar in another truck with the fuel pump in the tank and that would always whine, but it has been a long time (15yrs) since I have driven an automatic so maybe it is the trans?

I had a fuel pump on my 91 that whined for years.
Never went out but drove me nuts.New pump was $120.
so i just let it whine, I said, I have a pump in the other tank so I'll keep on trucken.
BTW, welcom to FTE, you stay on it and you will love it.I DO.

Whining during acceleration
I get a whine everytime I accelerate hard. It comes from the seat next to me. Mine will sometimes get quite loud. I realized a while ago that to keep the whine down I either have to not accelerate hard or wear ear muffs so I wouldn't hear her, uh...I mean, IT.
Boy, it sure is hot with ear muffs on.

I was wondering what tires you have and what pressure you run them at.
I would see if your dealer will let you take out another similarly equipped truck.

I have the same truck as you do only with a v10. I have the firestone tires that came on it and put the pressure at 60lbs all around. As the weather got warmer I notices a whining sound on my truck around 40mph and up,really didnt pay much attention to it till last night going to work,so I am out on a country road with no one around,I put the cruise on and stuck my head out the window trying to figure where it was coming from,"the tires"! Yesterday was the first day over 80 and the payment was hot so the tires were singing,coming home this morning the air had cooled off and the truck never made a noise. After reading monsta's reply it dawned on me that might be what your hearing! Just an idea!

Thank you for the vote of confidence Rich I appreciate it, and yes I would certainly know if it was tire hum or ring, I am not a complete novice as I do have some mechanical experience, worked on cars for two years awhile back and do all of my own maintenance. It only occurs when I am on the throttle above 50mph, let off the throttle and it stops hence the fuel pump theory, although it might be the trans? Checked fluid level it is OK, only 1500 miles on the truck so who knows. It has not made the noise since day one, this is a recent thing, about the last 500 miles or so. As for Monsta, ROTFLMAO! I had a similiar problem but it was more of a squeeling or chirping, and for that I can just turn up the radio, I guess that is what you would call "acceptable noise"?

Never suggested otherwise. I just asked what kind he is running and at what pressure.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but these trucks have electric fuel pumps
that run at a constant speed to maitain a constant fuel pressure,therefore why would the sound change at say 50mph or when you let off the accelerator? and be the fuel pump(unless the fuel pressure regulator is malfunctioning)???????
I'm kinda thinking out loud here Gulliver!
Could this noise be exhaust,we have had complaints of a wierd noise from
the crossover pipe that is restricted.
when the noise changes is there any signs of fuel starvation?

With only 1500 miles on it take it back to the dealer in which you bought it from.
If they claim that they cannot reproduce the noise (they all say that) ask to drive a identically equipped truck with the service guy. If that truck doesn't make the noise then the guy has something to go on.

what I said about gulliver being able to tell if the noise was his tires or not.Had no intention of causing any friction here I don't think Gulliver felt that way.Its so hard to feel emotions or sense by what is said on posts! I'm still learning how to communicate myself here!
