ok, im looking to get a plasma cutter. Ive been looking really closely at the Miller 625 and the Hobart 625. As best as i can tell, they are the same, just different names. I can get either one brand new for 1600. Anyone with expirence with either one of those good and/or bad?
I just bought the Miller 625 Cutmate about two months ago and it works great. New electronics make the Miller 30% more efficient which means that I can run it off of my engine driven welder(Miller Bobcat) out in the pasture in addition to using it in the shop. I don't know if the Hobart has that capability. $1600.00 sounds about right on the price for the Miller. Never used a Hobart plasma so I can't help you there. Unless the Hobart is as flexible on the power source, I'd go with the Miller.
I bought a hypertherm 1000 plasma cutter a year ago and I love it. I am a huge miller fan I have 3 miller welders, but my miller guy told me that the hypertherm is a better machine. The 1000 cost me about $2000 over the internet (no sales tax) and it will cut plate 1 1/4" thick.
Keep in mind that I have never used a miller plasma cutter and I have never heard of anyone having trouble with them. Just passing along what my miller guy told me.
Good luck with your purchase I'm sure you will be very pleased with plasma cutting.
Hobart is made by miller.I am buying a miller 625 next week I have been asking around I just found more millers being used I have a 210 mig I used for the last year I have had great service out of it. Good luck in what ever you choose.
I would like to have one but I would rather take the money and get a bigger metal lathe. Most of my cutting is done on a bandsaw. I have the o/a torch for cutting thick stuff. I could see a plasma as handy for cutting 1/16 sheet metal. But I don't cut that size much and just drag out a saw.
they are all good brands but hyperthrem is the better of them all. they tend not to use as much consumables. and thats where your money is at. number one rule for plasma cutters is over buy a cutter because the one time you need to cut something thick you will hate what you have if its too little.
Hypertherm:
Top of the line systems. Uses a blowback torch (no Hi freq), that you can drag on the plate at any amperage. Excellent machine and worth the $$$ uses three consumables. Great Torch design.
ESAB:
Invented the process. They use Hi freq to start the arc..this will allow cutting through paint etc. Also excellent machines and worth the $$$ Can drag on plate under 40 amp. Uses only two consumables: nozzle and electrode. New torch design with buttons on top or underneath.
Thermadyne: Good system but tend to be expensive on replacement parts.
Miller: compared to the above ...not really in the plasma game.
Tendancy to fail / expensive parts (Hypertherm makes their torch).
Lincoln: also not in the game same reasons..they make their own torch.
Like with anything: You pay for what you get. Pay less get less in the long run.
Don't get me wrong about Miller and LIncoln...both are excellent in all of the other products they make...plasma isn't one of them and they themselves will probably admit it as well..!!
