Respirator compressor
The charcoal masks require just a little more effort to breath because you have to pull that air through the charcoal. The air supplied ones make breathing more effortless, leaving you a little less winded after an overall paint job!! - especially for old guys like me!
Of course you have an extra hose to drag around though. (has a belt clip - not too much of a problem)marc
I agree with Marc. A fresh-air respirator is the only way to go. Especially with the 2-part urethanes containing isocyanates.
As you probably know, 1-time exposure to isocyanates can have life-changing affects and there is no way to tell who will be affected. One of the reasons OSHA requires fresh-air respirators for isocyanates is because they are odorless. There is no way to tell when your carbon respirator has stopped working.
I use a unit called Hobbyair. Had it for about 5 years. I use it for painting, sanding, and sandblasting. Eastwood sells them but if you do an Internet search, I think you can find them cheaper. $400-$600 depending on what you get.
I've used my cartridge mask for years with just about everything. I sprayed a car with urethane in my garage about 10 years ago and it made me sick. Didn't use it again till last summer on a motorcycle, (BC), and did it outside. Turned out OK, except for the pollen and dust. I've got airless expirience with primers, enamels, laquers, etc and I can deal with those - that urethane kind of scared me.
The boss has a nice Binks fresh air respirator that he's never used. I was thinking of buying it and using a small oil-less, new hose and filters with it. Do your systems have anything else I would need to have?
The Hobbyair has a box approximately 10"X10"X10" in size. A HEPA filter attaches to the box. You set the box outside, in the fresh air. A hose attaches to the box and leads to your mask. You can use either a full-face mask or a half-mask. I use a half-mask and put a moon suit hood on. The moon suit hood is pressurized from the mask exhaust and provides my head protection from the fumes.
If you are using air from a regular compressor, you need to be concerned about some additional factors. Ordinary air from an air compressor should not be used for breathing without additional filtering and carbon monoxide monitoring.
