YES my tailgate does the same thing. not all the time. only when my hands are full and my keys are in my pocket!! a real pain with the cover on the bed!

To protect Ford's interests! I would take the lock off and look things over, might have a plastic clip in there that is broke. If I remember they are fairly easy to get off. Can always go to the junk yard and get another lock, and then hae a smith replace the keyed cylinder

I had the same exact tailgate lock problem. It would often, but not always, lock itself. I could close the tailgate (unlocked), go to open it back up immediately without moving the truck, and it would be locked. It didn't bother me too much because I liked the idea of keeping the tailgate locked, and this forced the habbit on me. I brought it in under warantee when I was getting some other issues addressed -- the idiots hit me with the "could not duplicate customer's problem, so it works fine" excuse. I cried BS and had them call out a tech. Look, idiot, close it a couple times unlocked, and it will lock itself. Sometimes one closing doesn't cut it, so try closing it a few times. Sure enough, the problem was duplicated on the 3rd shot.
I can't remember what the repair involved, but I remember at the time doing some research on the issue -- it may have been on this board, too. Something about an O-ring I believe? Try running a search on the SD forum.
Is it possible your tail gate also has a power lock like a door? I've heard of it aftermarket, but I'm not sure about from the factory. If it has an electric lock and it's tied to your door locks, I've heard some guys complain about the truck automatically locking the doors when you put it in drive. Maybe that's whats happening....
I have a power tailgate lock from Bulldog Security. It is simply a power lock motor that blocks the internal mechanism from working. A key won't unlock it if it is locked... has to be the power lock switch.

That's kind of scary. I love the idea of a power lock, but not at the expense of a manual way out if the battery or lock motor fails.
