One piece seal, oil pan removal not required.

Replacing the seal is easy, getting to it is the hard part
Remove transfer case, transmission, and flywheel/flexplate, then pop out the old seal, pop in the new. Installation is the reverse of removal

are you absolutly sure it is the rear main seal? a lot of guys said the same thing me included and all it turned out to be was the oil pan gasket. you need to clean it real well and be 100% sure. a rear main is a lot of work around 450 to 600 dollars. an oil pan gasket aint no picnic either but it is a lot lighter than removeing the trans and transfer case.

Ford are famous for rear main seal leaks. I have replaced my f-100 twice and it will last a few years until it starts up again. my bronco leaks a little too. Just let it drip and remember to add oil when needed.

I did the valve covers, that reveiled the main was bad.

How tough is it to fix in a 91 5.0 F150 4x4? Costs?

Thanks
Bob

I had a 302 that pissed out the seal and it was obvious in which case I would change it. If its not bad, I would just make sure the valve cover gaskets and oil pan gaskets were good and just keep oil in it and replace the rear seal when I had a reason to be tearing that far into it.

I just noticed a little drip in my garage after having my Bronco for two weeks. It pisses me off because the seller never mentioned that. He also didn't mention that the factory CD player was shot, which isn't a big deal but was included in the blue book value. That and it was a crappy 6 hour drive home without proper tunes.

TommyLee,

Thats probably just from the oil pan gasket or valve cover gaskets.
