The subject of gas mileage has come up several times and I’m always surprised at the wide variation for our trucks. I thought it might be interesting to run a MPG poll so we can see a graph of the various mileages.
I always get some where between 19 and 22 mpg combined city/highway miles and I normally have a heavy foot. I usually shift around 4,000 RPM. BTW on a recent (600 mile) interstate trip I got 24 MPG at 75 on cruise control.
Sigma,
Those numbers are VERY impressive. Are you running OEM sized tires? WHat rear end ratio?
I just did a very controlled measurement of my MPG over about 550 miles:
I got avg. 17.3.
Best was 17.8.
Probably 50% interstate / 30% two lane hiway / 20% city.
Avg interstate speed 70-75 mph.
Light to moderate acceleration.
This is about as good as it gets in my truck.
I can do better driving 65 mph, but I ain't going to drive 65 on the interstate.
wow...I am barely ever breaking 14...but I need to go back to motorcraft plugs and wires...my driving habits could be improved a little...but for the most part i take it easy. I am running BFG All terrains also...which I am sure burns some gas....
I have the same tires 255/70R - 16, and gearing 3.55 as you. I see you are a crew cab so I'm guessing my trucks quite a bit lighter. On the 24 MPG number, I drove non-stop for almost a full tank of gas at 75.
I have a 99 F150 4x4 5 spd with 92k on it ....I measured my MPG a couple weeks ago and I averaged 14-15 MPG all in town driving. I drove easy and Hotrodded it a little.
I expected closer to 18 MPG--I am about to do a fuel system check since I have only had the truck for a month and bought it used I am now questioning the integrity of the seller as far as the maintenance. The K&N air filter was filthy.
oh...BTW...I have 32" allterrain BFG's and I am sure that makes a difference.
I'm starting to worry about my mileage. I filled up Friday and it only averaged out to 14.7 mpg. It usually is 16.9 - 17.4 mpg. I also watch the odometer to see if the mileage coinsides with the gas gauge, and it has been off. I think I better start doing a search to see whats starting to fail.
BlueOval that is exactly what I have been getting...we have the same truck basically...but i dont have the HD tow pack. let me know what you find...I still need to go back to OEM plugs. but I have noticed this drop in the past few months...and the plugs got 40,000 on them. something has just been off with my truck lately...but I cant pinpoint it.
MJ, I finally broke down and bought a new IAC valve today. I cleaned the original so many times I think I caused it to go bad. My truck is idling so much better now. It needed it.
I think its time to do a good de-carbonizing on my engine. I'll keep you posted!
I just jioned this conversation as I just bought a 2001 F-150 extended cab automatic and I am getting abotu 13-14 MPG in town. It has been very cold here in Cleveland howevre and wonder if that might have somehting to do with it. Any suggestions on what I should do to tune this and increase mileage?
I'm upset now, I have 97 4x4, reg. cab, short bed, with 128,500 miles and I average about 15.5, alittle less now with winter fuel. I drive about 60 miles aday, at about 60-70 mph, mainly at 65, and a few miles through town, to get home. I have talked with guys on the road with the same truck as mine and are getting the same as me, then I talk to guys with 4x2 and they are ones getting 18-19 mpg.
What gives.
Thanks Stampede
On average, I get right around 16-17 mpg on my truck. I usually get right at 400 miles per tank. What I do when I want to see my fuel mileage, is I fill my truck up all the way and reset my trip odometer to zero. Then I drive until I have a little less than an 1/8 of a tank and then fill up. It is usually right near 400 miles. 400 miles divided by a 25 gallon tank is 16 mpg. But there is usually still gas in the truck so I am only using about 23 gallons of gas, there for giving me more than 16 mpg. Everytime that I do this it comes out about the same everytime.
My worst gas mileage was one time when I did not even get 200 miles on a tank of gas. We were pulling a Uhaul to Texas and we filled up before we left. We did not make it from Jacksonville to Tallahassee before we had to fill up again and it was at about an 1/8 of a tank. And that is only 160 miles between the two cities. The rest of the trip, we got better mileage.
Thought I would let you know what has transpired since my post above. I should probably wait until the stats are in but I can't. I replaced the air filter with a K and N and just from the first quarter tank I already have seen an improvement.
Before, first quarter tank = 65 miles. Now, first quarter = 103 miles!!! Tell me I'm not dreaming here, and additional power to boot!:
