Unhappy auto heater a/c not functioning correctly

2003 Eddie Bauer Auto temp control isn't working right. I suspect it is wired incorrectly. At first the fan only came on full and never lowered automatically after temp adjusted. That appears to have been fixed however..... Question.... If the System is turned off .... and then I push the auto button what should happen... I assumed that the system would simply auto heat or cool to the desired temperature?... and the fan should operate at whatever speed is necessary to make that happen quickly??

Assuming that the temp has been set to 72...when the Auto button is pushed should A/C come on in the display? In my case it does and this seems wrong to me. Is that the default for the system when Auto is pushed? When I push Auto I then have to push A/C to turn it off..... every time.

Related question... If I want A/C I assume that I should select A/C ... not Auto or A/C to make it come on?

Can someone confirm for me what their working system does? tks

I thought it was wacko myself... but in the Auto position the A/C has always been on in all my Fords...
I ASSume they do that for humidity control... which both my Ex's needed.... in the 'right ' conditions, my Ex can fog ALL those huge windows in seconds

I used to override the system when I thought it should be on just heat, but do not any longer... the compressor cycling does not put that much more of a load while pulling your 8k lb truck around

If you want a/c - either auto or a/c will do it for you, but the auto position regulates the fan speed as needed to get to the set temp and then slows down..

Thanks for quick info... I feel better that systems seems to be working correctly then... guess I will try leaving it on A/C as well...

Along these lines, does anyone with the steering wheel controls for the heater notice that you have to only push once on the temp control and fan control to get them to change but you have to hit the volume control for the radio twice to get it to start moving? That's been an aggravation for me but I assume it's just another example of Ford's under-refinement with stuff like that.

My auto heater functions the same as above. AC light comes on when switched to auto, fan comes on if the temp needs adjusting. The fan won't start blowing, or at least not much, when the truck is cold, BTW. Heat gauge has to come up a little before the fan will start.
