I have a fuel leak at the fuel pump. I could probably drop the tank and replace it myself, but I'm VERY fearful of making it go boom. Has anyone had a shop swap out the fuel pump assembly? If so, what did they charge?
I did a write up as some of the things that I ran in to when I changed the sending unit / pum in my wife's 91 EB. I also have a 94 and they are identical.
Thanks for the info, and I did see that thread. But it didn't answer the question about what a shop would charge to do this.
I'm leery of doing this myself for two reasons. First, this would need to be done outside, and the temp here is in the teens and twenties. I could get past this if I needed to. The second reason is the boom factor. I've never removed a gas tank and I'm terrified of the combination of fuel vapor, static electricity and sparks.
Thanks again for the info, but I'm really just looking for a dollar figure that someone has paid a shop to do the work.
Thinl it would be about $600 from what I've heard others say. Pump assemble is about $220 from dealer. The steel tunes are known to rust where the assembly mounts. There isn't that much danger but the tank and shield are heavy and require a floor jack to support it. Ive done it twice and it takes about 3 hours.
Well, I picked it up from the shop today, and it was $400. The pump assembly was $180, filter was 16, and the lock ring was $14. All that plus 2.5 hours labor = no more gas leak. It will be nice to have the X back in the garage during the snow that we're getting tonight, tomorrow, thursday, etc, etc. I really hate having to clean snow off a car that's almost taller than I am!
Yeah, but it's a genuine ford part. I figure if the first one lasted 10 years, the next one should too. I didn't want to get an aftermarket pump and have to do the whole thing over again in a year or two when it burns out.
