I have recently put shortys on my 302. Only problem is that my pipes do not match the so called "bolt on, match factory exhaust." How do I get my pipes to match up? Is it possible that the pipes will move over when the engine is warm, after wrenching them down muliple times? Its only about 1/4 inch off, theres a little give but not much due to the H-pipe. Can't take it to a shop since it does not meet and the regs in Iowa. Wish I knew the shop that did the exhaust....I dont know what to do....

is it a 1/4" off on each pipie or total of the two?
if its only a 1/4" all together you could use a ratchet strap to pull the pipes together to bolt them up with no problem. or undo some of the exhast hangers to take some tension off and with one side bolted have a friend pull out on your other exhaust side till it lines up.
if its off more than that you could double up head gaskets and use the strap. but since you already have the headers bolted up you may need to cut the H pipe as a last resort.
well that just some options. the ratchet strap does work!
the best way to do that is to take a torch ,bolt one side up, heat the y/pipe in the middle , you probably need a friend to help, and with it cherry red in about a 3"section push the other one so it maches up , bolt it up and let it cool dowm , that not only fixes the problem but relieves the stress so your headers wont loosen up and leak , good luck, bob
I bought a cheap set of of block hugger type headers from summitt. I think they were pacesetters but i'm not forsure. Instillation wasnt all too bad, the driver side was a pain but the passenger side was cake. I can notice a power increase since the addition of the headers... espeically when the rpms get over 2500. Haven't had any problems with them yet.

No, I have true duals, the driverside header pipe crosses before the tranny because of the front fuel tank. Since my 302 is fuel injected I fabed a h-pipe and put my o2 sensor on it. Its sounds pretty bad ***, it has its own sound unlike most trucks with duals around here. Used 2 1/4" pipe that comes out a 45's. I decided to use 28" packs for the deeper tone. As for price on the headers i orderd these out of summitt catalog for about 160$.
Ill see if i can get some pics.

That's good man, Can you do me a favour and check my gallery for pics of my setup, and tell me if I'd have to change everything in order for the headers to fit?
I was wondering if you had the stock y-pipe with it's dual design and put duals from there like I did. At my y-pipe it is totally welded. The pictures don't show but it is.
I am only going to get shorties but would they connect right up to my stock y-pipe? Then I could retain the y-pipe and o2 sensor.
So you must have only 1 o2 sensor, as it's in the cross pipe(h-pipe) does the engine work alright? Does it run rich? I'd like to improve the sound on my truck but do it with the least amount of cash. Thanks.
I dont see anything that will effect the headers on your current system. The only difference that i'm seeing is that your o2 sensor looks like is closer the engine than mine, but should not affect anything.
Now on mine I had some problems with the header matching the pipes, I had to move back my header pipes about 1"-2" and cut and reweld the header pipe on the driverside. So I can't tell ya if they will match up since i dont have a stock header pipes. Its worth it man.
Nice looking truck man, I have to admit mine has been somewhat abused being on the farm. I'm looking into getting some pics of it.

forgot to answer this one....mine now seems to run a little lean, my plugs are a little white now, but my truck has always ran rich so. After you put the headers on it will run really crappy until the computer will adjust to the flow. The check engine light will come on a couple times, but work its way out of it.

So it does run lean? Interesting. Is it ever going to even out and run normal? See my truck runs rich I think, so this will be a good mod.
Can you post some pics so I can see what yours is like? I think I know what it looks like I just need to see it to be sure.
I will definetly have to do some piping work, I was just wondering if the truck ran right after the install. Hope everything goes well and I'll let ya'll know how mine goes when I get my headers on.
The truck seems to run normal now. It ran fine after I just installed the headers. Its gonna run really rich at first because there is going to be more flow and the computer thinks that it needs more fuel but it will adjust to it. After I put the headers on and let the engine warm up, rapped her out a couple times and I could get flames to come out of the tailpipes...little too much fuel. Dont worry bout it though.
I had cracked manifords before this so that could be a reason why ran really rich. I think if its a little rich it wont hurt anything.
I'm working on some pictures..trying to find someone with a digital camera.

Do those headers have the thread inserts for the A.I.R. tubes? I was wondering, because the truck I'm working on putting back together has no AIR pump, and I'd just assume keep it that way. Thanks in advance.
I'm pretty I dont have a A.I.R. pupm either but the headers have holes by the collectors, and just put the plugs back in them. (Could be for o2 sensors?) The only thing I have on my exhaust is the o2 sensor.
