Lighting for the 57 F100? Oops I forgot to say shop

Kenny,

Please excuse the deception but the lighting is for me to see the 57 F100 which is necessary to work on it. Right. That isn't too much of a stretch. Besides I posted it on the garages forum and 140 people looked and had nothing to say.

I use flourescent lighting in my garage. The twin 40 watt kind. All of mine have a real ballast and not the baby transformer. Some had it but as they go bad I replace them with a real ballast. Now I have some questions. My lighting was installed several at a time as I had money. During this period of time they had those energy saving fixtures which I think were 34 watts. I also have a couple of bulbs that say 25 watts but claim they put out the light of 40 watts. All are the T12 configuration.

Can the resident expert please tell me what combinations will work as far as ballast and bulbs?

Can someone explain why you can reverse a bulb and it will sometimes work?

Can someone explain why a bulb (old) would not work in one fixture but will work in another?

Can someone just tell me everything there is to know about flourescent fixtures, bulbs, transformers and ballast?

There is but one man in the universe who could answer these mind numbingly technical questions. He is on sabbatical. We miss you, George. himmelberg

Charles,

I've had very good luck with the cheapie imported shop lights I got at Wally world for only about 6-8 bucks per unit. I wired my garage with outlets in the ceiling controlled by a single switch and bought about a dozen of them and hung them on hooks. When one goes I just toss it out and hang another one in it's place. I only had to replace a couple in two years...and the 25 watt tubes only run about 50 cents each on sale...

I can't stand to throw things out. It really kills me. I have one of the older fixtures that really have a reflector on them. The newer ones don't have s**t for a reflector. Do the newer ones have a transformer or a ballast? Do you think that the 25 watt ones are as bright as the 40 watt.

No, they don't have reflectors, but if you hang enough of them you don't need reflectors. I know little about the internals, but I'd say they don't have ballasts because they are very light and instant on. As I remember the ones with ballasts feel like they have bricks mounted in them. I can tell a difference in the 40 vs 25 watt as I had some of the 40 watt tubes in my basement. The problem with the 40 watt tubes is they cost about double the 25 watt tubes and you don't get double the light output, nor do they last any longer. I hate to throw things out too, but this is becoming a throwaway society, so you may as well join in...

the old fixtures had oil filled ballasts in them the newer fixtures have smaller ballasts. if your old fixtures are in good shape you can replace the ballast and the fixture will be as good as new. you can get electronic ballasts that are not affected by cold and use the thin t8 lamps. they might cost more but only draw .5 amps. if you look on any ballast it should tell you what lamps to use

Pete, why do my flourescent lights not want to come on when the humidity gets high? Seems like it is not a problem when you first put in new bulbs, but it gets worse with time.

I am not Pete but the probable cause is corrosion on the terminals of the bulbs and receptacles of the fixture. Use sandpaper or something on both and some dielectric grease. Just a thought, I have been wrong before....Kevin
