I have a 1994 Explorer 4x4 and my cooling/radiator fan runs constantly. Even when the motor is cold and is just started and the outside temps are below freezing. Is there a sensor that needs to be replaced or does the entire fan need to be replaced? What kind of price to get it fixed? Thanks ahead of time for the help.
That's normal for a termostatic, viscous fluid type fan clutch like these have. As the engine warms up, the resistance in the fan clutch increases, and the fan spins faster. Though I doubt you could see the difference at idle.
When the fan clutch fails, it usually loses the ability to spin faster, causing overheating problems. Occasionally, it will "freeze up" so that the fan is locked to engine speed.
I understand what you are saying, but the engine never warms up very much at all. I can drive this vehicle for 15+ minutes and it still won't be in the normal operating range and the heater still won't be blowing very warm air. The thermostat has been replaced and that had no effect. Any ideas?
Thermostats are known to be bad right out of the package. You might try another thermostat. Is the upper thermostat hose hot? Indicates coolant flow when cold?
Can you spin the fan by hand (Engine off, please. Makes my hand hurt just thinking about trying this with the engine running )?
