I am still trying to get my '81 F-100,( with a 300/6 with 75K) engine to run better. Starts great, but after a few miles boggs down when I accelerate especially when shifting into higher gear and rpm's are low.
A few people have said it may be my catalytic converter. Is there a easy way to check this. Would banging on it loosen things up? Can I just take it out, or replace?
Also may be a carb problem, or ERG valve (if I even have one) Two mechanics have looked at it and said everything looked OK, seems to start and idle fine, but does not drive well when it is below zero.
the way to check a converter is first with the truck running put your hand to the tailpipe you should feel the exhaust pulsating if the coverter goes bad it will feel like the output of a shop vac you can also check the exhaust pipe it will be really hot in front of the converter and much cooler behind the converter or you can take a 3/8 drill and put one hole into the pipe before and one hole after the converterfeel the differance in flow
I think I saw a procedure that uses just a vacuum guage and observation during starting or reving engine etc. Vacuum drops to 0 then recovers slowly. Don't remember what it is for sure.
