'04 Expy Brake Pad Replacement

My dealer just replaced the front pads on my '04 Expedition and they don't seem to make any less dust than the originals.? The replacement part number on my receipt is 2L1Z*2001*BA. Please tell me they didn't replace the pads with the original type. I have seen posts indicating that the new part number should be 4L1Z*2001*BA. Anyone know for sure?

As Shpedly said in this post........

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...5&pagenumber=9

Well its been over a week since the new version of pads were installed and I'm pretty pleased. I'd say the the reduction in dust levels are on the order of 90%. A full week and and some 400 miles of city driving and the wheels are clean as a whistle. So far no noise as in squeal and overall brake feel is the same as before (excellent). Somebody said that the price of the new kit was $115 but I have verified again with my Ford dealer that the price is $230. The old pads under the part # 2L-1Z-2001-AC are $115 but the new kit is $230. This of course all coming from the local dealer who has been totally in the dark on this whole issue. If somebody knows for sure otherwise please post it. Thanks in advance. Ed

That's correct it should be 4L1Z*2001*BA, I hope they didn't tell you this would correct the dust issue. Also did they do it under warranty or did you pay out of pocket to have them replaced?

They did it without cost to me; whether that means warranty or not I don't know. I was calling the service manager with my complaint three days after I took delivery. I knew this was an issue simply from what I had observed around town. So when I noticed it only took a day or so for the dust to get out of control I contacted my dealer, armed with a wealth of info from this site. They said they would replace the pads when the parts become available.

Technically I guess it's at the dealers discretion to have replaced your pads. So I believe it was not through warranty. I say that because the tsb for the new replacment part 4L1Z*2001*BA states dealers are not to replace them simply for cosmetic reasons.

So if a dealer replaces pads with 4L1Z*2001*BA, it will either be a cost to you or the dealer, not Ford Motor Company.

I believe when something is replaced under warranty the dealer can charge the cost of the part and labor back to Ford Motor Company. Basically gets reimbursed. All this I'm not 100% positive.

Dealer Net: $115; Suggested List: $230.

Two dealers told me they cost $115. If $230 is the MSRP I guess no one is marking them up.

I work at a auto parts store, and also own a 04 Expidition with the same front pad dusting problem. After having it for about two weeks I called my local dealer service to find out what the deal is with the front pads, and pretty much got the blow off. So I talked to my Wagner brake parts rep here at work about it knowing that Wagner supplies alot of pads for O.E. vehicles. This is what he found out: Initially, Ford was using Raybestes pads on the front and Wagner on the rear (no problems on the rear). Late last year Ford went to Wagner asking for help because they where having severe problems with the brake dusting problem on the front. So begining in mid December of 03, Ford is now using Wagner Thermal Quiet pads. The catologs dont list pads for the 04 model yet, but my rep said they are the same as the 03 models which use a Wagner part number MX934. Depending on your market area, these pads should run around $60 to $70. I and my father in law have an 04 model, so my rep was kind enough to donate two sets to me, but I havnt had got to replace them yet, but will soon. hope this info helps.

I was looking at the Wagners as an alternative to the Ford ones. They are $49.79 + S/H ($6ish for ground) at rockauto.com

While Federal-Mogul supplies the 04 Expedition pads, the Wagner subsidiary of Federal-Mogul pads are not the same friction materials, insulators, or steelbacks. Two very different product lines.

Wagner does not supply any materials to the OE market, Federal-Mogul does. Raybestos is also not an OE supplier.

FYI, Federal-Mogul owns Waner, they are one in the same. Wanger is Federal-Mogul's brake devision. And you are correct, the O.E. pads are different than the aftermarket, but the differences are VERY minute. You are also right about Federal-Mogul supplies the O.E. , but what Federal-Mogul is suppling, are Wagner brake products. Also, Raybestos-Honeywell is infact an O.E. supplier, as I stated earlier, the front pads on an 04 Exp. prior to Dec. 03 are supplied by Raybestos-Honeywell.

So which set of pads will dust less - the Wagner after markets or the Federal Mogul replacements from Ford?

I put the Wagner's on about 3 months ago. They dust much less than the originals, but they still leave a lot more dust than I prefer. I'm debating on whether or not to get the Ford replacements.

OK ......

Honeywell owns Honeywell OE, Bendix aftermarket and Jurid OE Europe. Jurid was the supplier of the earlier front brake pads.

Federal-Mogul OE supplies the rear pads, old and new.

Dana owns Raybestos. Raybestos and Honeywell are competitors, not the same company.

Federal-Mogul brake division has 4 groups. Abex HD, Federal-Mogul OE, Ferodo (Europe OE and Europe / US Aftermarket), and Wagner aftermarket.

I know just a weee bit about F-M's products. Trust me.

Tell me what current vehicle Raybestos is the OE supplier on?

I run a set of English made EBC Brake Pads on mine with a set of Brembo slotted rotors. I got tired of the brake pads from Ford and several others I tried that put out a lot of dust. I got my pads from THE TIRE RACK for $79 and I have excellent brakes with no dust.
