Researching my earlier 4x4 auto compatibility post, I have come upon a big question. I can't tell if I have a C4 or a C6 auto transmission. The factory codes on the door plate say that I have a C6, and I know the original tranny is still in the truck. However, if you go by the diagram in the LMC catalog and look at the transmission pan, it is a C4 according to them (the pan is rectangular, it has 4 straight sides). Anyone know what gives? The truck is a 71 LWB 4x2 Sport Custom with stock 302, Ford 9 in rear.
That's what I figured - except why in the world would Ford's own data plate and shop manual say it is a C6? I know both previous owners and the tranny has never been changed out, only rebuilt once. I am going to measure it after work today - according to the tranny guide in the transmission forum a C4 is 17 or 18", a C6 is 20". It may be a C6 going by this from the transmission guide:
1966 - 75 have rectangular pan with 17 bolts & long measurement on front and rear edges. Shorter on sides
is the torque converter cover part of the main case of the transmission?(ie: one piece from engine block to tailshaft housing) if it is its for sure a C6, if it has one that unbolts(like an old standard tranny) its either a C4 or a fordomatic.
I asumme the maincase is all aluminum?
if it is, its not a fordomatic/FMX.
If memory serves it is all one piece and aluminum, but I have found myself to be unreliable in the past.... I called my wife at home and she was reluctant to crawl up under the truck, so I guess I'll have to wait until tonight to check and see. I'll let you guys know - thanks for the help!
Any idea how I could adapt this C6 to a 4X4? Will just changing the tailhousing and output shaft (no small feat, I know) suffice?
Well, it turns out that it is a C-4. The bell housing is detachable and there are 11 bolts on the almost square transmission pan. That is so weird seeing as how the warranty plate says the transmission type is G, which decodes as C-6 for 1971. In fact, I don't even see C-4 listed under the possible transmission types. Oh well, live and learn.
