OH NO!!! Not Another One

'72 Gas Gauge Problem. Cab Gas Gauge shows 1/4 tank when empty. I was thinking of cleaning sending unit and float.... but after reading several threads, it sounds like I should just replace it if not too expensive.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

You might take the sending unit out and see if bending the arm slightly will make it read correctly before replacing it.

Ditto that. It's easy to get at. Take it out, see if you can make it read right by moving arm yourself. If it reads ok, then bend it up slightly and re-install.

Bending the float UP will make the arm go LOWER(inside the unit) and in turn make it read EMPTY.

I have tweaked my unit by the bending system. It is not always possible to get it to read correctly thru the entire range so mine is set so that when the fuel guage hits empty the truck stops. Better than having an unknown reserve amount and getting to depend on it.
