I have a 96 f350 7.3l and every time i start it, it will run fine for a couple of seconds then start chuggin like it has no diesel. And after that i will drive it down the road and it might top out at 45 maybe 50 miles an hour. Decreasing speed uphill. Kicking hard when it shifted. Some times, in nuetral or park, i would floor it and let the rpms slowly get up to about 3500 (that is almost red lining it) and let off the gas pedal real fast and it will go back to normal. My first guess was fuel filter and i changed that out but wasnt it. My next guess was the injection pump. Well there went that quess my truck doesnt even have an injection pump. Then i thought it might be the fuel pump. But i started thinking the fuel pump is manual not electric so if it went out the truck wouldnt even start. Then i thought it might be the switching valve getting stuck on my dual tanks. The switching valve is like $150 and i just was wondering if anyone out there knows my problem so i dont have to go spending money on the wrong thing. Thanks alot.
Has it just started this nonsense during the winter? If so, you may be suffering from gelled fuel. Try puting some power service in the fuel and run it for a while at idle till everything warms up.
96ford4x4turbodiesel- Where is metroplex? Dallas? If so, you probably don't have much to worry about regarding winter fuel. My first guess is that it's the fuel regulator screen being plugged. Here is a link that will walk you through it.
