What are the different gas engines offered in the f250 for 92-96 models? I'm looking to buy one and I just want to make sure of my options. I'll be getting an extended cab, HD 4x4 6' bed. Thanks in advance
There were a wide array of engines available in the 1996 F-250, from the 4.9L (300cu. in.) Inline Six (my personal choice), a 5.8L (351 cu. in.) V8, and a 7.5L (460 cu. in.) V8. Plus, the 7.3L (International Truck Co. sourced) Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8. All fine engines. Personally, my ultimate pick of the litter would be the Diesel. And my pick of the gassers would be the 4.9L. However, any of these engines will be reliable and trouble free with routine maintenance and reasonable care.
If I'm not mistaken, there was no 5.0 in the '96 F-250. Unless it was on the non-HD 250s? It's been a while. I believe that the 5.0 was not available on the HD 250.
I6 4.9 Liter
V8 5.0 Liter
V8 7.3 Liter Diesel
V8 7.3L Turbo Diesel
V8 5.8 Liter
V8 460/7.5 Liter
V8 7.3L Power Stroke

Those are all the options listed for the 250. I have seen very few 250s with 5.0 and I'm not too dissapointed, they never should of put a 302 in a 3/4 ton truck.
i am with Dave I don't think that the 302 was ofered in the 3/4 tons. I have the 460 and love it, sure it doesn't get the best gas mileage, but you don't buy a truck this size for gas mileage. The 351 is a good choice if you don't tow heavy loads. I'd go for the 460 they are a lot of fun. Hope this helps
Originally posted by acerockola77 The 5.0 was offered in the 3/4 ton but they are hard to find, I've driven one before actually.
After looking at the HDs options, there are only 3 options. The 5.8, 7.3 and the 7.5.
Argo was right
That's at least true for the '97-'98 F-250 HD's, after they introduced the restyled F-150's and F-250 LD's in '97.
Prior to that, though, the 4.9L I-6 and 5.0L V-8 were available. I don't think they ever put that V-6 into the older-style F-250; the introduction of that motor may have marked the demise of the 4.9L I-6, and hence its availability in the F-250.
I believe the 5.0 was only available in the light duty and the 92-96 the 4.9 was only available in 2wd. I was looking very hard for a 92-96 4.9 4X4 with ZF-5speed but none was to be found. I settled for the 460 and will never look back. My 1990 F250 4.9 is a HD but only 2wd and a C-6 Auto it only gets 10 mpg down a hill with the wind to your back. I never regretted getting a 460, 12mpg on average and axle twisting torque.
I agree, a diesel or a big block V8 are the best choice in a 3/4 ton or one ton truck. The small blocks just dont have the ***** and dont get much better mileage than the big boys either. Couple miles per gallon, small price to pay for being able to fully use the towing and hauling capapility of the chassis.
well, my truck is proof that the 5.0 is in f250's, and iv seen lots of them around, they just have a dana 44 front, instead of a dana 50, and a semi floater rear, they have the same transmissions and transfercases. however the light 3/4 ton was discontinued in the eirlier part of the 90's
the 5.0 is a little underpowerd, ill give it that, but its not to bad on the wallet for gas.
