I have a chance to get a 4x4 F100 frame for my truck, but it suddenly occurred to me - can the 67-72 4x4 trucks be adapted to use a C6? I'd like to keep it auto if possible. Some of my coworkers think there is an adapter for it - do any of you guys know? The tranny that is on the frame is an NP435 and it has a stock transfer case, whatever it was in '72.
What I am saying is, I have a very good C6 on my 71 LWB 2WD now (I just verified the tranny model with my shop manual, code G is a C6 for 1971). I want to convert it to 4WD and the most sane way to do this is to drop my body, bed and engine on a 4WD frame from 67-72. Is it possible to use this C6 tranny for 4WD, ie, hook it up to the original transfer case either directly or via adapter? The one that is coming with the frame is a manual NP435 per the seller, which I'd prefer not to use.
It is my understanding that these trucks were divorced mount transfer cased. At least the 250's were. If it is a single speed or full time transfer case then I would try to go to the junk yard and pull the adapter and transfer case out of a later model ford truck up to 79 I believe. Then you can use your transmission and have a better and stronger transfercase.

i have a 72 4x4 f100 the transfer is bolted stright to the tranny the divorced case wasnt till 73 and yes it is a single speed. best bet would be buy a tcase for a 73 get a crossmember from a boneyard use the c-6 with the stack tail housing try to find a 73 with all three drive lines, the wheel bases should be th same so there should be no problem with a direct swap and if it is just a frame it makes for easy measuring and you could just make your own cross member.
only one question why not use the 435 they are a rock solid tranny you can beet em to death and they will take it all and keep right on going, they have an awesome low gear and will crawl along anywhere all day. but hey its your choice the c-6 is an awesome tranny in its own right.
I appreciate all the comments! It turns out that I was wrong, my trans is most definitely a C-4 regardless of what the shop manual said. I think I'm going to pick up the NP435 "just in case" and see how it goes with the C-4 and the transfer case (Dana 24?).
Just curious, what does your shop manual say engine code is. Since it says your tranny should be a C6, I am guessing it also says your engine is a 360. I don't think the 1/2 tons came with C6 unless they had the 360/390, and Ford never bolted the 360/390 to a C4.
The manual says the engine is a 302. Weird, huh? I've been checking into the C4 and it looks like a C4/Dana 20 combo is a good combination, once the C4 is modified to accept the T-case.
