Fact or fiction: Is there another dipstick availiable for this engine other than the black one that is impossible to read? Heard there was a grey one somewhere. Checked with local ford dealer and said only one part # for this. thanks
Do a search on dipstick. This has been a topic of conversation many times.
Mine just broke. T handle came off. Ordered a new one day before yesterday. Still haven't heard from dealer on new one. I hope it is gray. If not, I will paint the darn thing.
I'm supposed to keep a close eye on the oil level (early engine build mine is) but that "stick" is almost impossible to read. I going more on smell I'll probably get cancer of the nose now!
guys, try this one it might work for you. try to put masking tape on the metal part of the dipstick just above the black part. now you can see the oil level. good luck, hope it helps.

SBV 45 - Do you suppose your dipstick broke because of the need to check it so often. I would imagine in a normal situation that you might find a broken dipstick on a vehicle with 100,000 miles. However, since we are all unpaid test dummies for the 6.0 I guess we can expect this.
Not really. I check it about once a week. Usually after filling up. I don't think that it too often. I haven't lost oil or had diesel oil added to the crankcase. The only gripe I have is with the Oct flash that fixed my rarely occurring surging idle and hosed my mileage and acceleration. I will give them time to fix it. I deal with the dealer and present facts and info. Other than that, I like my truck.
I just spray painted mine with white enamel and let it dry for a week.
SBV45--where did the broken part go, in the crank case? Also if you like the way your tow/haul works, the newer (12/12) flash will hose it up. My truck ran GREAT until the Oct flesh, and down hill since.
