Just added a K&N filter to my 2000 PSD. Did not change to a full mod intake, just the filter. I noticed a big difference right away, my old filter was not bad, could still see light as my Grandfather would say, but I was surprised when I cranked up at how smooth the motor performed all of the sudden. I live down a dirt road, and have to changed filters regular, so really bought it for the cost savings vs changing filters other than any performance issues. I have run K&N filters before in gassers I have had, both Dodge and Chevrolet, but never noticed this big of a change before. Any thoughts on this?
Its hard to know what to believe on the K&N issue. Some swear it flakes , lets oil drops hit the turbo blades, causing damage, and some say it leaks small dust particles through, also causing turbo damage, while others say they have run K&N for years with no problems. It seems like a lot of folks here really like Tymar, but then I also read some articles that suggest Tymar does not filter very fine particulates from the air, which could also let dust particles damage the turbo. For me, performance and high volume air flow is not the only concern. I also want the air filtered to the point I feel my engine is safe, but not being restricted for air, either. Getting the best of both worlds seems like a real challenge.
My understanding from independent Hot Rod tests, is that the K&N filters finer particles better than a regular air filter, while flowing more air.
The only way oil particles could hit your turbo is if someone way - way over oiled the material. I cleaned my K&N with detergent, then I oiled it. I took a hair dryer and put it up the the K&N and turned it on max. I was trying to see how much more air it flowed than a regular air cleaner. I did not get any oil on my hand, or anything else for that matter...so I don't think the oil thing is a concern.

On this board and others, the majority of people with complaints are also the ones that put together an imitation TYMAR. They don't have the real deal, they've subsituted a different component or left something off that's included in the TYMAR setup to save money.
On one board, a guy was bragging about making his own TYMAR for $35, and it only took him an hour to install it. Then, he realized that his didn't fit properly, so he went back at it, spending more time, modifying other stuff under the hood to make his unit work. After messing with it for three weeks he finally had something he could live with. He didn't list the other expenses he ran up trying to make his $35 TYMAR work for him, nor did he say how many hours were spent assembling/disassembling other components under the hood, but I'm guessing he didn't really save much money compared to getting a real TYMAR in the first place.
