I pull a 5th-wheel RV with my F-250 Super Duty extended cab truck. I have the Triton 5.4 Litre engine and a 4.10 rear axle. The 5th-wheel RV dry weight is 9,150 pounds - when loaded it is about 9,500 pounds. The truck is rated to pull 9,600 pounds.
I'm hearing a noise and feeling a vibration under the drive train "hump" in the cab of the truck. It sounds like a transmission problem. However, the transmission isn't slipping, the transmission fluid is still a bright clear red and there isn't a "burnt" smell to the transmission fluid.
In addition, the floorboard below the passenger seat gets hot while pulling the 5th-wheel.
I've had the truck in to the shop twice (it's still under warranty) and tried to explain this to the mechanics. They hook it up to a computer and tell me nothing is wrong. The noise being made is definitely wrong and I can't figure it out.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I might suggest to the mechanics at the dealership where I bought my truck?
The rig weighs 9,150 lbs dry weight. We add about 500 pounds of weight with our "stuff." I don't fill the fresh water tank while pulling and never pull with the gray or black water tanks full to save on weight.
The dealership where I bought the truck said I shouldn't have any trouble pulling up to 10,000 pounds with the truck, so it shouldn't be a problem.
The noise only happens when I'm pulling the rig and only happens after a stop. Sometimes I'll pull forward after stopping, or turn left or right and get the noise. It never happens while cruising, whether going up or down hills, or on a flat stretch.
Gee...thanks for answering me. I love my Ford truck and my 5th wheel. We take it camping at any time of the year. The best times are when my boys and I are using it for "Deer Camp."
