351w headers

Hey guys I finally got my 65 out to Broken Arrow from my mom and dads house in Va. Im still debating between my 351w and my 390. My 351 w is complete except for some manner of exhaust. Can I use headers for a 69 with a 302 or am i stuck with trying to find some good manifolds out here. (I left a set of70 mach 1 manifolds in my other truck when i took the engine out. they went for a good cause my cousin swapped her 302 into that 72) The 390 is in pieces. which engine would you guys use? or where can i get some headers for a 351w in a 65 in Oklahoma.?

Both are good engines. Sounds like 351w is less work and cost. Fuel economy would also be a plus. One other thing is these engines wont bolt up to the same size trans. What trans do you have now. What engine came with the truck. As far as headers go i am not sure. Hopefully someone else will know.
Good luck.

I have the 3 speed that fits behind the original 352 to use with the 390 and i have the 3 speed that fits the windsor so trannys are not a problem. anyone know a source for manifolds in the tulsa area? i saw a 67 with a 302 with factory 5.0 heades on it once but that truck was an automatic no clearance issues at all. has anyone tried those on a 65 with factory column shift? thanks Don

Recently started looking for header for 65 f100, w/ the 302ci, and unable to locate company who carry them. Saw ad in ebay where seller has set of 'Holley Flowtech' headers claims will fit the 65 f100 with 302ci. However, emailed 'Holley' who emailed they do not carry headers for that application. Possibly because the 65 f100 did not come with 302ci and companys can not validate all options, or applications. If most header applications will fit 69 thru 79 f's with the 302ci, and particularly the 352/390 ci, not sure why they would not fit the 65. May email the seller on ebay and get some additional info. on those ' Holley Flowtech'.

Have seen headers Holley, Hooker, Dynomax, Hedman, and others, running from $135 to $185, standard painted. More if you want ceramic, stainless, ete. Seen 'BlackJack' headers, not sure who makes them, on ebay go for about $45. Most online, or local auto parts stores can order them for you. Can go to the company's web site and if they don't sell online will give location of nearest distributer.

Have two 65's, one with the 302, and other with 390. Really like the 302 for power, and economy. There are a set of Hedman headers on the 65 390ci, admittedly tight fit, so it would seem the 302 application should work.

Not sure if any help, but likely get additional info, and opinions from other members.

Anyhow, good luck,
dave

The front half of these trucks were all the same dimensions from I recall 61 to 79. That said, a later model with a 302 should provide the same header for your 65 with a 302. I believe "custom cab" is running a 302 in his truck, maybe he may have alittle more insight.

Besides, most steel can be "massaged" with the right hammer

With a small block in there you should have lots of room for headers. I agree with Mike G I'd order a set for a later model and I'd bet on them fitting. As long as its a 2WD I can't see a problem.
Headers will probably be easier than finding manifolds for a small block that aren't cracked.

These headers from Wild Hoses 4x4 are in my 66 with a 351w. Perfect fit. Check my gallery for a picture of them in the truck.

Any late model 5.0 shorty header will bolt on to a 302 or 351w. There is a ton to choose from. I can tell you for certain that the Ford Racing Stainless shorty header will NOT fit on the passenger side of a 351w. It dumps straight into the frame rail.

Dave-
I install a 302 75 model attach to a C-6 with a factory column automatic shift; I purchase a set of Flow Tech Headers from JC Whitney; I displace the engine back about 1" farther than stock engine mount from the factory 352 my truck had prior to my purchase, it was sold to me with a 300cid; my headers where tight especially passenger side, initially touching trans pan and I even had trouble installing starter due to the headers angle; only paid $129.00 could of purchase shorties for about $240 -$400; but decided to conserve cash flow, the long headers are only designed for either automatic column or floor shift manuals / auto.
Additionally once I went to muffer shop/ the collectors where restricted against the frame cross memder just under the front portion of transmission and I decided to cut out the flanges and weld my pipes directly to my header; (Not worry of having to change collector gasket I guess). If I had to do it all over again I would of installed shorties, they allow for so much more room and less restriction and heat transfer is more flowing.
There's several companies that supply headers and JC Whitney shipping was free if I can remember right.

Hope this helps too give you a better aspect on my modifications.
Good Luck...

P.S. I still have my stock 302 exhuast manifolds if you want them; let me know and we can make arrangements for them...

Mitch

Unequal length 5.0 Mustang headers {shorties} fit on my '66 with a 351W, column shifted C-6,and a '70's power steering box too. Had to slightly dent one tube at the P/S box otherwise a great fit. Just find someones old H-pipe from a 5.0 Mustang {2 1/4, good street size} and whack the flanges off of it to give your exhaust shop something to build an exhaust system from. Factory ball and socket sealing that doesn't leak and can be easily taken apart if needed. If you still have the factory manual steering box I think it would be not even close. Long tube headers give slightly better performance but I don't think you would notice on a daily driver pick-up. Sure beats cast iron manifolds! It sure worked great for me!

Thanx, really appreciate the input.

Currently have the stock manifold on the engine. Was going to weld exhaust and mufflers when started looking at headers.

It has floor shift, but like to keep options open. Looks like shortys would be the better choice to meet all options. Somewhat of a restoration in progress.

Thanx again,
dave
