I was thinking bout buying some tow hooks for my ranger. It has 4 wheel drive but no hooks. Recently I had to pull my uncle out of the ditch and the circumstances at the time prevented me from pulling from the back (Plus I like pulling from the front, get more torque in reverse) and we had a hard time finding where to hook the strap. But I was wandering where I can find me a cheap pair of tow hooks and where would I mount them. I noticed in the hole in the bumper, I guess its called the valence (sorry not real sure of tech terms), there is metal behind it. It doesnt look that thick and I was wandering if it would support pulling on another vehicle or should i find another place to mount them.
if your going to install tow hooks see if you can find one that already has them and get an idea. if you get a pair of hooks it would really need to go to the frame only. Pulling a vehicle can be alot of pressure. the only other thing would to install a trailer hitch or just a ball in the bumper but even then the bumper may not be strong enough for some pulls.
Yea I looked at the metal behind the bumber. It is the frame of the truck. And on each side it has one hole between the metal. Like it was prefabbed for one. Yea i would never hook it up to my bumper. I have seen rangers wit their bumpers folded up on them where the pull was 2 strong.
Just some thing to think about.Your gears in your rearend are cut at a angle to give you the best pull forward. When you are in reverse you are putting pressure on the wrong part of the gear.I have seen what a hard pull in reverse can do to a set of rearend gears and I can tell ya IT AIN'T PRETTY!Tow hooks are manly for pulling you out. Dont Buy cheap ones {you get what you pay for}get some off a Ranger in a junkyard or buy some that are made for your truck.Mount them to your frame,if you do serious wheelin mount a trailer hitch{frame mounted one} to the front and rear of your truck.JMO
