The turn signals started acting weird on my '01 SuperCrew. At first I thought is was the cold weather (-35F) a couple weeks ago, but it kept getting worse until today when they refused to work at all. Took the truck into the dealer and they said the multi-function switch is bad... $207 to replace including labor... ouch.
The wipers and dimmer still worked fine, just the turn signals and emergency flashers have the problem.
I'm a little surprised that the switch would go bad at 40K miles. Anyone else had this problem?
I had one go bad on a late 80's GM car at 100K (the lever that did everything but drive the car!). The turn signal lever on my 78 F250 (with a factory tilt wheel) still works great.
I knew I should have bought that extended warranty!
i've replaced the switch on my '97. found a local dealer over the internet selling it for around $40 if you ordered online. go to the counter without pre-ordering & it was $70.
anyway, it's real easy to replace. remove the shroud around your steering column. remove some screws, disconnect a couple of plugs, and it's out. reverse to replace. 30 minutes max.
TURN SIGNAL and HAZARD SWITCH, F250-350 Super Duty 99-01 $89.67 $71.74
Thanks for the information guys! I did a search on this topic and someone had mentioned that the steering wheel had to come off also. I was a little hesitant of doing it myself because of the airbag.
I'll let you know if I decide to attempt it myself. Right now, the dealer is still waiting to get the part. They said they usually keep a few in stock, but are out of them right now. Must be a common problem. I do have a CAR QUEST here, so maybe I'll check if they have one.
I have the same problem. It is the Multi Function Switch that will cost about $50 to $70. The place that is charging you $207 for it, should be run out of buisness. A half hour is all it should take for someone who is moderatly mechanicaly inclined (you know how to use a screw driver right?)
I found that the problem only happened on right turns with mine, and that it only happened when the switch was cold. Once the inside temp of the car warmed up, I could use the signal just fine.
You can do it yourself, but remember to unplug the batery of course. For safety and for the airbag.
I just changed mine 2 days ago, Dave gave me the instructions and it was very easy.. took about 30 minutes start to finish.
Im not the most mechanicaly inclined individual eiether but it really was simple!
I wimped out on changing the switch myself. I just did not have time to do it this week and the wife is taking the truck on a road trip this weekend. The problem had gotten worse and the brake lights were not working at times.
They replaced the switch, a wiring harness, and a couple turn signal bulbs. The switch was around $80, the harness was another $30. They charged me $50 for labor, but I still had to pay another $35 for the initial diagnosis. Used to be they waived that diagonsis if you let them fix the problem. They even passed on the $9 shipping charge to get the switch in from an out-of-state dealer. What a racket! I definitely am going to avoid much business with this Ford dealer in the future.
